Just updated photos of the Bison bison collection!

Howdy! I just spent some time updating photos of my buffalo nickel collections. It's been a long and difficult road to making photos that I find acceptable in terms of quality. I know that techniques vary quite a bit and people prefer different technologies, but mine is to scan the coin, rotate and crop it so that it is basically straight, then adjust the light (which is never good with a scanner) so that it matches the coin. The colors are true to the coins but the luster is nearly impossible to catch. My 1934-D is an excellent example of a coin that has unreal luster in person, but in my scan you just can't tell that. Oh well, I think that photography of coins is a big trade-off of qualities of the coins, no matter what technique you use.

So if you want to have a gander, please follow the liks below. Meanwhile, here's the 34-D. smile.gif

By the way, the only coin different in the short set (Little Bison bison) from the long set is the 36-S. Hoot

I think that 34-D is LACK luster. You should ship it to me immediately for closer inspection and possible restoration.

In all seriousness, you NEED a digital camera. Quit fooling around and get with the program, bub... grin.gif

Coin's on its way for a custom paint job! insane.gif

I have a digital camera (Nikon 5700) and hate the photos I get with it! 893whatthe.gif Colors and details are quite accurate on most of my pics, only lustre is not shown well.

You have Nikon and you "hate" the photos you get with it? It has GOT to be user error. I use a Nikon Coolpix 950 and get great results now and I'm a insufficiently_thoughtful_person. Lighting is KEY...just ask Shylock. grin.gif

I await the arrival of the specimen.

This should be a treat to see the images in your set, Hoot. As for digital cameras, I also hate them but think that I might buy a Nikon D-70 this week. It's the first digital that makes me think it can replace my Canon AE1 SLR as it is a digital SLR.

Thanks Tom.

As for the camera you are considering, I think the Nikon D-70 is a good way to go. I bought one of their point and shoot SLRs with a fixed zoom lens (35-135 or so) and it's auto focus is too slow for me. The camera does a lot of things, but I can't stand the auto focus. I'd also like a camera with interchangeable lenses and I've considered the Nickon D series.

These D-70s are digital, right? If so, what makes it one that can replace the typical SLR?

They look and feel like an older-style SLR and they have interchangeable lenses. They also can accomodate some of the extra flash gadgetry of the higher-end Nikon line. Of course, like any digital, the resolution is not that of quality film. Yet for most of us, that matters little.

I have a Nikon N-70 SLR which has a switch to the right of the lens for turning off the autofocus feature. Does the D-70 not have this switch? I never use autofocus for Macro anyhow, because of the shallow field depth coupled with autofocus error. It is easier for me to focus manually in Macro.

You obviously have top coins there, so why not have Shylock properly photograh them for all to enjoy, individual coin identifiers, and/or insurance records? It might be worth it. The scans OK I guess, but someting to think about.
