A less than perfect MacArthur Uncirculated $5 gold

3 posts in this topic

I placed an order for one of these coins during the "Last Chance" the promotion the mint had at the end of the year. Here is the coin I received. It is less than perfect, and would probably grade MS-67 if I submitted it. The marks are on the reverse, and I have pointed them out in the third picture. At certain angles these marks are like the shiny spots that show on less than perfect older Matte Proof coins.

In view of the fact that I would not get anything in exchange if I returned this piece, I'm going to keep it. I now have example of the all of the Five Star General coins in Proof and Unc.

Although there appears to be a mark of MacArthur's nose, that is a digital illusion. I can't see any mark with a 10X glass so it is not there.
