Cleaning Holders

11 posts in this topic

Was looking for some advise on how to clean and perserve NGC & PCGS holders. Mainly about taking off stray marks and spots such as sticker glue, and if their is a solution that fills in light scratch marks. I thought I seen at least one product that did this somewhere, but I can't recall where or what the name was.

Thanks

There is a member who seems to only post on the PCGS boards, his name is Pushkin, and he sells small tubes of slab cleaning solution. He gave me a tube at one of the Baltimore shows and I used it on a lightly abraded slab and it worked quite well.

I use go gone to remove the adhesive from slabs and actually just about any type of metal polish will remove the scratches from plastic. I use an aluminum polish for mag wheels in just small amounts and it will polish away small scratches with ease.

I also use a liguid metal polish---the stuff BlueMagic sells at auto parts stores.

A little dab goes a long way and works very well.

Goo Gone is great for sticky residue! I tried Scratch Away and Brasso metal polish and they help slightly. They don't work on big scratches for me. I have an acrylic polish (sold to remove scratches from plastic fish tanks)that is even worse at removing scratches but is great for cleaning up the slabs and I use that often to remove dust and any other polish residue I might have left behind.

Recently someone sent me a coin in a plastic sleeve. This tiny bag was the perfect size for slabs and protects them from scratches. He said they were archival quality and available in a baseball card shop.

I have been using them myself. The only downside is that the slabe won't fit in a PCGS storage box with the sleves on. The lid won't snap into place. I've since ordered an NGC & Whitman storage boxes to see if that works out better.

Hi Steve:

Here is a little dealer secret I will share with you....To remove scratches from slabs, either light or deep, buy yourself a can of Brasso metal polish. This can be found at any Home Depot and is rather inexpensive. Apply a small amount to a soft cloth, or even a paper towel and rub the polish into the plastic holder in a circular motion. Use as much as you need depending upon the severity of the scratches and then wipe off. This works just as well on GSA holders and they come back like new! For glue and stickers, buy yourself a bottle of Goo Gone that may be found in any hardware store. This is a lemon scented (citrus based) solution that will remove all the nasty sticky stuff from holders. Again, use a soft cloth or paper towel. The people that sell products online that are supposedly made specifically for these problems will not be happy, but oh well... grin.gif
