Unbelieveable!

What an oppurtunity it was for the true Jefferson nickel collector!

On ebay, a Frosted 1938 proof coin with a mintage less than 20,000 sold for less than a FS 1950-D Jefferson nickel! Congrats to you Hoot on your sale but it was certainly a great proof coin that got away.......holy cow!

Anyone want to take a gander on why this happened? screwy.gif

Sure wish I could have seen the proof piece in person. I wouldn't buy a coin like that sight-unseen for fear of ending up with one like I have that has a partial frost on most (not all) of the devices, but is otherwise just a PR66. (Was that a run-on sentence or what? 893whatthe.gif) I can't tell from the photo if there is much contrast at all. All I know for certain is that most PCI slabbed Jeffs that I've seen labeled "deep cameo" were but CAM. confused-smiley-013.gif

Hi Hoot

I've had jwcameo, can't rememeber his name though, 27_laughing.gif, on the phone before and he's a reasonable collector and dealer. I would have bought the coin inspite of the c-spot (i wasn't always that way though) but I'm out of work and that I already have a nice frosted (mostly the obverse) 1938 proof. But here was a coin that Jefferson collectors should have ate up IMO but maybe they all already have one but I doubt that or they don't collect the proofs. Maybe they were scared off because of the c-spot? I don't believe it was because of the registries for obvious reasons! 27_laughing.gif

I just shook my head in disbeleif when no-one sniped that coin.

PCGS or NGC has recently slabbed a cameo 1938 and others will try to imitate with lesser frosted coins.

Do I believe the HCams are out there, time will tell.

Wanted to add, no I don't believe the coin was a true cameo!

I sure wish I'd have seen it in time. I'd have been a strong buyer of that Jefferson, even though it's not my series. I love buying these low pop, early Jeffersons (Lincolns too). I believe their day in the sun is soon to come and when it does? The low pops and low mintages won't allow all the collectors who want one to buy one so cheaply.

Plus, that Seller is outstanding with wonderful customer service.

I've purchased quite a few coins from JWCameo (Jeff Werlin) and have done well with most of them. He's a good guy and is a fellow Rochesterian. However, I'm very leary of coins in other TPG slabs without having them in hand to examine first, and agree with KoftheJ that I really don't think this would pass muster at NGC as a cameo by their standards.
