Let's See Your Franklin Halves!!

...I have a few (not photographed coins at NGC for grading and slabbing, but here is my first Franklin purchase an ANACS 1960 PR68 Franklin. It's in transit to my home at this time and I will have it repackaged in an NGC slab...

That's a pleasant looking 1960.

It's almost impossible to grade proof Franklins (indeed, proofs of any kind) from images, because hairlines tend to be the limiting factor and they don't show up well in images. However, be aware that crossing a coin slabbed by company A to a coin slabbed AT THE SAME GRADE by company B is by no means a slam dunk.

In any case, as mentioned that's a nice '60 Frankie with decent cameo contrast. (thumbs u

I appreciate your comments and guidance. Unfortunately those two are the only photos I have at this time. They will be prepared and photographed properly once I once I get my cotton gloved hands on it.

I looked over your Franklin collections...very impressive. The type set I surmise is your "life's work" and legacy. Next to my grandson & wife, #3 on my expenditure list is my collection. Just above food & health care.

That's a nice proof you picked out Hurricane, and as Skyman said, with a bit of cameo on the obverse.

I own a few Franklin proofs myself, nothing major as I'm concentrating on business strike Franklin's right now.

Once I have a full set of business strikes I plan to look more into the proofs. I'd like some with a lot of cameo contrast eventually.

Here are two raw '56s of mine

Attractive raw Franklins Bsowa! (thumbs u

Hey Hurricane, while collecting coins had been high on my list, particularly in the late 1980's early 1990's and from about 2003 on, over the last 5+ years they've dropped QUITE a bit in/on my collecting to do list. Given that you and Bsowa are relatively new here, you'll find out soon that over the last 5+ years I've REALLY started to use my collecting budget to buy items having to do with Space Exploration (predominantly NASA) from 1957 - 1975. My goal there is to collect at least one flown object from every Mercury, Gemini and Apollo flight. I'd say it's sucking up about 90% of my collecting budget. Here's a link to my recently completed "set" of items from all 10 Gemini flights.

Gemini flown items

I still Love coins, I just can't afford them and space memorabilia both, so I've become MUCH more focused on specific sets for my high end coin collecting, so I still get the thrill of the hunt, but there's not much outlay on the day to day end, as I only find 1 or maybe 2 high end coins a year. To keep my hand in in collecting coins, right now I'm collecting raw Franklins and Washingtons to fill Dansco albums. It's a lot of fun and relatively inexpensive.

Here are the '56 and '58-D from the Dansco album. I got them both out of Mint Sets that I own.

So you collect flight flown objects!!

Jeez, though I was born and raised in B'klyn NY, I've lived the last 25 years on the west coast of Florida.

A sister of a former colleague of mine worked for United Space Alliance. Her job (no kidding) was assembling the manifest of gear, personal items, etc that would be taken into orbit by the STS crew members. EVERYTHING she touched, flew in space. A few years ago, while the center was shut down to visitors due to the 9/11 attacked, she invited myself and my wife out to the facility for a special Family day gathering. Talk about access!. I spent half a day with Endeavor in its OPF hanger watching them change out the 3 main engines. I did a walk around and went over to mission control (it was empty) and plopped my butt in the Launch Director's chair. Next to the one in the Oval Office, that has to be the 2nd coolest chair in the US.

Sorry for being totally off topic here, I have some good pics I will put up so you can peruse. ...And no, I was not allowed to take any souvenirs.

The Franklin toning of both you and Bsowa's coins is fascinating. I'm still selling off my "junk" silver and other hobby supplies of years past. Now that my "job" is to watch my grandson while his parents work (Grandma helps too), Coin collecting will be my #1 hobby...both for the beauty and investment.

I deeply appreciate your help. I'm watching the HA & former Teletrade auctions as well as Ebay (after sifting through the frauds, counterfeits & junk) and taking notes on prices realized vs. census.

Life gets no better...

Skyman, that 56 is awesome! I don't think I've ever seen one quite like that.

Very interesting collection of space flown memorabilia, pretty surprising that a 1/4 eagle went into space.

And yes Hurricane, you have to look through a LOT[/b] of junk on eBay before finding something decent.

Hurricane, that is cool about your colleague's sister! Congratulations on "being" the Launch Director, that sounds like a LOT of fun. Speaking of fun, have fun with your new collecting!!! I look forward to seeing your new pieces.

Bsowa (any Red Sox offshoot there?), those are fun 1960 Franklins you posted. The proof is classic in that the Franklin proofs of 1960 and 1961 tended to have, for whatever reason, a fair amount of them that were mismatched cameos, e.g. much stronger cameo contrast on one side than on another. The toner looks great, I'd love to see it in hand.

Actually the color of my 1956 Frankie is a fairly classic color for (nicely toned) P mint Franklins from 1956 - 1958. For whatever reason, the P mint Franklins of the latter 1950's often toned a blue color.

I got lucky with that 1956 Mint Set that I got the above Frankie out of in that I got both that one, and this Frankie, which I sent in to PCGS and it came back MS66FBL.

Coinman, that's an awesome proof. What did it grade?

Sky man, are those two raw? They look really nice.

And deerefan that's a cool pair.

I had a pair of 51 s EOR toners but sold one because I didn't like the look of the toning.

I'll get some pics up here soon.

...Sky man, are those two raw? They look really nice...

Thank you. They are slabbed, the '60 is an NGC PR67UCAM, and the '61 is a PCGS PR68UCAM.

lol.... ok, I really don't have a lot of graded Frankies, but being on a business trip this week, I stopped by everyone's favorite pawn shop and HAD to buy something... I slightly overpaid for it, but I figured it was worth it just for the story... that and otherwise I would have had to consider a silver round of Chumlee.... and that just is lower than even I will go. I did get a picture of the clerk I bought the coin from holding it though...

Mrs. Hurricane and I visited the shop on a trip out west last year. I enjoy the show and the guys are fun to watch.

But really...a super premium price for objects featured on the show? That's price gouging like the kind you find at a pawn shop!

Oh, never mind....

Enjoy your Franklin

lol, I agree about the price gouging. I went by at 6pm specifically so I could miss the lemmings trying to get a glimpse of these clowns. In my mind, they are just regular guys and no more a celebrity than I am. I enjoy seeing the things that come into their shop on the show because there are sometimes things I own or have owned brought in. Even that level of interest is waning for me at least though because of the obviously staged scenarios played out in the show. Even so, it was cool to go in and look around to see what it was like and the Frankie is quite nice... My cell phone picture on the hotel bed didn't do it justice. I figure I over paid for it by about $10, but it came in this really nifty velvet bag with drawstrpings, so that makes it all even..right? :P
