First, you don't see crescents on Peace $ too often. Second, you hardly see rainbow crescents on Peace $. I've never done business with CollectorUSA, but they make a strong pitch indicating their grader is a former PCGS grader.

I'm amazed that this coin was raw and it had a BIN for $60.00. Guess its a gamble, but for that price, I couldn't resist.

Any thoughts whether it'll slab or bag @ NGC? And what grade would you give it.

Thanks for looking,

Michael

Michael - I've bought thousands of dollars of coins from Collector USA. Dale Williams and Dan Wahr are two of the finest people in this business I've ever encountered. Very honest and straight-forward. And they are both very conservative graders. Whatever they said the coin grades, I'll bet my bottom dollar it'll do that well with NGC or PCGS.

Looks NT to me. If I'd have known they had that coin in their store, I'd have had it in my album collection! thumbsup2.gif

Looks NT to me.

I looked at some on-line advertiesments for PCGS slabbed toned Morgans, and many of them have color that come out just like the above picture.

Looks MS-62 to me with a shot at 63. The picture is not coming out too well for me.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the compliments. I too think its original toning and the 1st rainbow bag toned Peace $ I have seen. I have owned several other crescent toned Peace $ however, all seem to be album toned. I do have a 1922 NGC "Binion" MS65* that's probably bag toned, but I can't be sure. This one though appears to have a typical crescent shape caused by another coin laying over the reverse.

Very few Peace $ sat around in bags for that long and many didn't have the planchet prep or wash to allow for the same colorful toning that you see on bag toned Morgans.

To a toned Peace $ nut like myself this is quite a find. If I could only find one with textile toning across the obverse I would be in heaven.

Thanks

Michael

Perhaps it's NT, but a couple of things look funny to me.

First, the crescent is not the precise shape of another coin. I know that this does not always have to be the case. Several coins could be laying on this one to distort the exact arc.

Second, the colors seem to be mixed and not in bands as you might expect. Again, I know that colors can be mixed.

Third, as others have stated, you just don't see too many toned Peace Dollars and I can't recall seeing any like this. It could just be that everyone is so used to seeing Morgans that this just looks odd for no particular reason. But, if it is NT it's quite a find and a great price, too.

And, as Dennis Miller says.......... "of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong." confused.gif

I finally received the coin and in hand, it looks even better. While I am not an expert in toning, this really seems to be NT. The colors are even more vibrant and some of the toning blends onto the obverse of the coin. If I had to guess I would say the area just to the top right of the Eagle's head is where the coin made the most contact with the bag. The colors are the most intense in that area and the obverse has slight toning in the same spot. As for grade, maybe a 63, more likely a 62.

I will be sending this one off to NGC shortly and it has quickly become my favorite toned Peace $.

Thanks

Michael

Michael - I talked yesterday with Dan at Collector USA about the coin. I gave him a hard time, telling him that those are the kind of coins he's supposed to tell me about when they're in the store! He said that it "sat over there for quite a while... but it was obverse-up, so I guess you missed it!" Yup.

Again, congrats... wink.gif

Michael, I barely know how to get around these boards! Isn't that something. ANA member for years, Registry set participant and I don't come here often because I can't figure out how to get around. I'd like to answer your thread's question, giving my opinion that the coin looks mighty NT to me. I'd also like to leave you a PM but can't figure out how. Geez! frown.gif
