Just got it in my sweaty hands earlier this afternoon. It's a very difficult thing to capture in a photo but I think you get the idea!

The wife actually picked up the mail today and didn't ask what it was. 893whatthe.gif

ooops.

It's a PCGS VG8.

It's one of those coins that even at huge shows such as Baltimore that you just do NOT see.

This is one of the granddaddies of all doubled dates!!! smile.gifsmile.gif

Nice going on the acquisition. As you have already mentioned, you might search for one of these at FUN, Long Beach, Baltimore and the ANA and not find one for sale. At least, not find one in the grade that you are looking for.

In my opinion, this is a better coin than the 18/7 SLQ, 18/7 Buffalo, 55/55 Lincoln or any other twentieth century variety. thumbsup2.gif

That is, indeed, a superb acquisition goose! 893applaud-thumb.gif HUGE congratulations to you! Like Tom said, this is the quintessential doubled die of the 20th century. thumbsup2.gifthumbsup2.gif Doubt I'll ever own one!

Congrats Goose! thumbsup2.gif

I agree with everyone else that this is an extremely hard coin to find, however I was able to get a close up look at a really nice XF example about 3 or 4 months ago. cloud9.gif

Thats a really nice coin that the fact that it is circulated just adds to the mystique. Imagine how many people handled it before an astute collector plucked it from change. Congrats Goose.

I was thinking the same thing as I read through the posts! Didn't anyone look at coins back in those days! 27_laughing.gif How long did this coin pass hands to get to that level of wear before someone could barely make the date out for what it is today?

That coin was once a brand new mint state nickel and for a long time nobody cared or had knowledge of or could read for that matter before someone came along and recognized it as a double dated 1916 nickel........like 80 years! 893whatthe.gif

Do major coin shows still spend to circulate collectable coins prior to a show. To generate public interest. To see if these coins come back to the show for their monetary rewards?
