PCGS overgrades FS nickels!

7 posts in this topic

Here's another example of a grossly overgraded Jefferson nickel by PCGS! This coin grades MS63 at best with it's weak strike and numerous marks. There are some great quality pictures provided in this auction, I just can't say the same for the coin! Earlier die state examples can be had for this variety.

Hi Leo. To be honest, I think the coin maybe does grade MS-65. But even if it did technically have full steps, I don't think it should qualify for such a designation, because the coin still seems weakly struck. This is one problem I have with such designations, with my biggest complaint being against "full head" SLQs. It's sad to see such a designation on a coin that otherwise has weak detail.

Having put together a couple of UNC Jefferson nickel sets over the years, I recognize 1946-D as being one of the poorly produced issues.

PS: I don think the price is ridiculous.

Narmuriel,

Posts and pictures of what someone considers to be over or undergraded is simply a matter of how well one knows the series and how picky they are when it comes to that series.

Leo has extremely high standards when it comes to Jeffersons. And while even I, who also collect Jeffs, can learn plenty from him, I have to take into consideration his penchant for expecting the TPGs to grade Jeffs to his standards, which will never happen! Sorry, Leo! There are very few times Leo has agreed with either PCGS or NGC grade on a Jeff we've discussed on the forums, but many times I've had to agree with him. And this is one of them. A very weak LDS with too many hits in the wrong areas to qualify for a 65. I'd not grade it over a 64 and can see the 63 as suggested.

Here is an example of a NGC "gift grade". Should never have made 64 let alone the 66 its labeled. And there's a nasty hit to steps 3, 4, 5 under pillar 3 that with NGCs normal strict criteria, the FS should never have been given.

Yes, I was thinking 65 all the way, but I just can't overlook the marks on the reverse.......even without a large scan I am sure those nicks are clearly visable to the naked eye........MS63-64 in my humble opinion.

JamesFrom my experiences, the 46-D, they are quite common fully strucked in 5 steps but locating an EDS example is what makes it a tough date. Comparing the strike and variety in question with the example shown in the Cheerypicker's Guide, there has to be thousands of those varieties available but where are they? The 46-S is the one that's not an easy find with a full strike. DavidIf you agreed with everything I say then there'e really no need for the other to exist! 27_laughing.gif But I have seen just about every early date in it's EDS strike.GDJMSPThank you! acclaim.gifKryptoThe sad truth is, longtime collectors, not including myself, have turned these coins down because of their strikes or because they don't have full steps but then some TGC turns around and slabs them! Those two coins that fetched some $55,000 between them are not full step nickels! But yet they still exist and one of the new owners has proudly entered it into his collection! Here are a a few 46-D's that I have. I picked this one up recently. There is room for improvement for the strikes for both coins although the first coin's strike is nice.

Here's a 6 stepper with a mushy strike. The flat areas at the top of the head and above the ear and the reverse! Yikes! This coin was in a ANACS MS65 6 step holder but I cracked it out a couple of years ago to do everyone a favor, it was overgraded!

And here's my set coin. And that's a hair to the right of the eye!

And for kicks, here's a prooflike 46-S with a nice strike. The reverse has some severe damage but it's still an interesting coin with it's strike, prooflike surfaces and full steps!
