Looking for a grizzly bear coin

4 posts in this topic

I saw a coin for sale at a coin booth a few months ago and I've been trying to remember where it was from as I've asked my dad to get one for me for christmas and I just cant remember. It was a large brown coin with a roaring grizzly bear. It was a Canadian coin. I keep thinking British Columiba but I'm not sure. I have no idea what year or if there are multiple years for this coin. I dont care what year I just want the grizzly. I've been searching google and ebay and havent had any luck finding it. I should have just bought it when I saw it the first time, but when I went back later it was closed. It was about twenty dollars canadian. Any help is appreciated.

It sounds like what you are describing is actually a token, a medal or a gaming piece. If it were dark brown then it was likely a copper or bronze piece and I can't recall any official Canadian coinage struck in those metals with the design element that you mention.

I would bet that it is a token.

In 1980, Canada issued a commemorative silver dollar with a polar bear. In 1990, Canada issued a $150 face gold coin with a polar bear, and a $300 face gold coin with a polar bear. In 1996, Canada issued a bimetalic $2 face coin with a polar bear. And in 2000, a special commemorative with a polar bear with two cubs..

In 1936, the US issued a 50C face commemorative with a grizzley bear.

Yes, the Bay Bridge commemorative.

Also, in 1925 the California Diamond Jubilee commemorative half dollar was released by the U.S. Mint with a grizzly bear on the reverse.
