1964 Half Dollar

3 posts in this topic

I have a 1964 half dollar that is double headed. I have looked over the coin and it has been stamped that way, it was not two coins ground down and glued together. Were there misprints of this sort or did someone get a Die and do it in the garage? It just looks a little too good and lined up to have been done at home.

Hi and welcome to the boards.

What you have is known as a magician's coin and these can be bought for around $10. They are indeed two coins, one of which is hollowed out and the other has its rim removed very carefully. The one with the rim removed is then put into the empty cavity of the coin that was machined. If done well, it is very difficult to see that there is a seem inside the rim.
