Freedom Towers Coin Fraud

10 posts in this topic

Hey, I hate to hash up termoil over a "fake" minting company, but I was reading about a court order that has stopped the sale of the "Freedom Towers Coin" from the National Collectors Mint. Remember the NC Mint, we had a little topic a while ago about their "Proff CC Morgans" for only $9.95!

Well I'm sure everyone has seen that TV Commercial for the Freedom Towers Silver Dollar, "made from real WTC recovery silver".

Anyways I got in a heated debated with someone about a week or two ago who said the company was using false advertising and mis-interpretations. Every line of the ad seemed perfectly understandable to me (being from the coin world), but I can understand how anyone else would be completely lost and think it was a super deal.

Well sure enough, a court order has been placed on the NC Mint and they are currently not selling the dollars.

Heres the News Article about it. In my opinion, the only thing they could acutally nail them on is if the silver coating used wasnt really from the WTC. What do you guys think?

I had a friend ask me about these last week. I told him to avoid these like the Bubonic Plague.

Funny thing is, from what I am hearing, these actually DO contain a miniscule amount of WTC silver, something like 0.1%. Personally I like the US mint's take on this. US Mint press release

My Brother-in-law purchased a few of these, I just wish he would have mentioned it to me before he did. When he told me, I didn't want to burst his bubble so I gave him a "really...yeah...". :-)

You might have been better off telling your brother-in-law the truth, Dave, as this might have saved him from making a similar mistake in the future.

Once, my mother bought me a colorized American Eagle! She paid about $40 for it from QVC. 893censored-thumb.gif I just handed it back to her and told her that I hoped she kept the receipt as it was essnetially worthless. She was at first highly offended and stated something to the effect that since I liked coins she bought it for me. I agreed, but stressed that I liked coins, not bastardized profit centers. She sent the piece back, got her money back and has never made the same mistake.

Tom,

When I was younger, my Mom also used to buy me coins. She bought partial commem sets for me directly from the US Mint. (Partial, because she never bought the gold.) After a couple of times, I finally got up the nerve to tell her what's really going on with these and asked her not to do this anymore.

She understood pretty quickly the concepts of markups and secondary markets. I don't think she ever knew that I ended up buying the gold coins just to complete those sets that she "started" for me.

I'm in shock! 893whatthe.gif

Doing some late nite ebay browsing, and what to my wondering eyes should appear but these freaking Freedom Towers Coins again! Looks like the NC Mint has been forced to cancel this coin program, as there site still explains the court order. But that's not stopping some ebayers from make a pretty penny of this fake and now discontinued "coin" if you can all it that. Originally being sold for $19.95, these babies are going for $50 a pop now! WOW!

If you were 893scratchchin-thumb.gif unfortunate enough 893scratchchin-thumb.gif to pick any of these up, it's looking like a great time to sell!
