Hi Hoot

I posted this over in the ASK NGC forum but it didn't take! foreheadslap.gif

In response to; 1964 SMS Jefferson nickels (et al.)

DWLange has given the best history of this coin so far. As relayed to me by a fellow FS Jeff collector in the mid 90's, many of these SMS coins came through Stacks although I was told they were stolen from the US Mint and hush was the word to keep about these coins. ANACS certified one back in or before 1996 and labeled it as a Satin Proof and a 67. I passed on a chance to buy a NGC PR67 coin for $1700 while at an Indianapolis, Indiana CSNS coin show back in the late 90's. The coin was a very nice example of the 1964 SMS coin. If I could find away to literally kick myself for not buying that coin, I would certainly do so!

Hi Dena

I see that now although I did think it wouldn't take since most of the threads/questions asked show only one response. So that's why I felt silly after posting to that thread because I didn't ask a question, only adding input.

Thanks for the heads up!

You know, Leo, I had to read that post three times before I understood what the heck you were saying. Are you missing a comma someplace in there, or is it just me? insane.gif Anyway, if you want to know something more about these coins send me a PM and I will give you the contact information of someone who has handled more of them than anyone else I am aware of. smile.gif

Thanks Tom,

Yeah, you're right! It should be two sentences!

And you have already provided that info, something I can't afford, as life would have it.

Thanks much, Leo, and i'm going to follow Tom's lead. I also want to dig up Dave Lange's article from the early '90s on them. When I return home from this stint of fieldwork, I should have a bit of time to devote to Jeff nickel research. These are fascinating coins to me, and beyond a doubt, the most rare (in terms of absolute numbers) of the series. If I find out more about them, I'll post more.

Adios! Hoot

Great!

On a side note, the two presentation proofs handed to the Mrs Felix Schlag are supposedly the rarest in the series! And guess what, they don't know where they're at! (long story) I just wanted to mention that!

I've also heard via a reliable source that Schlag's wife said that there were no presentation proofs - just a pair of early strike specimens of the 66 SMS coins. Something else to find out! laugh.gif
