I just read a neat article on "Button Hole" Keelboat Nickels

I just read an article at www.varietynickels.com about a couple guys who found what they are calling a Button Hole Jefferson nickel. I think I'll open one of the boxes I got from the bank and go treasure hunting!!

So where is the button hole? I don't see it. Could be from die polishing also.

If you go to the full article, the picture is blown up. I thought they were talking about the "bump" that looks like a button. But after reading your reply I went back and looked again. To the left of the bump is a black rectangle laying sideways. I think that's it.

If that is what they are talking about I have over sixty of them with a "Spiked Head" Error/Variety, also.They look like grease strike through errors on the ones I have.

There was an interesting article in the Viewpoint section of the Oct. 7th issue of Numismatic News on page 8.

I haven't gotten any Keelboats yet but I'll check through them when I do.

I was able to examine two of these specimins and the article you read on my site is a shortened edition of the same article by Eric Von Klinger and myself printed in last weeks Coin World.

 

The die chip actually appears as two chips that resembles a "button hole" in the collar of Jefferson directly below the adams apple.

 

Certainly an interesting die chip and I just had a collector from Texas inform me this evening that they are trading at the $20 range at shows in Texas. They are also available on eBay at this time starting at $5. There were 3 listed last week at the same price but none sold...

When I looked at the photos of the coin, my thought was that this was more than one die chip imposed on the other, but I'm certainly not the expert. Iteresting stuff. When you get the article from NN, JT, I hope you'll either pass it along or post it on you site.
