Is this 1936d buffalo graded MS-67* by NGC.

606010-1936d%20buffalo%20obv.jpg606012-1936d%20buffalo%20rev.jpg

The coin has magnificent rainbow bull’s eye toning in shades of pink, red, green, and gold on both the obverse and reverse. Although it is not noticeable in the images, the bull’s eye toning goes completely around the rims on both sides of the coin. The bull’s eye toning blends into beautiful light violet toning on the centers. All the colors are iridescent. The surfaces are immaculate and have a proof like look to them. The strike and luster are superb.

I tried numerous times today to get a good image of this coin, but I just can’t seem to get the lighting right to be able to show the full beauty of this coin. Christo_pull_hair.gif Believe me, the coin looks much, much nicer in hand that my image depicts.

According to the current (09/24/04) NGC census they have graded 5 1936d buffalo’s MS-67 and only one, this coin, MS-67*. They have graded none higher, making this coin the highest graded 1936d buffalo by NGC. It is truly one of the finest known examples of a 1936d buffalo nickel!

Hoot,

I wish you could see this coin in person. My image of it stinks, and does no justice to the coin at all frustrated.gif, and I don’t just mean color wise. The strike, luster, and surfaces are all MUCH better than the image depicts. I’ll be showing it to Tomb the next time I see him. I hope someday we can get together for a little show and tell as well!

I bet that that coin jumps out at the viewer in-hand! This next Parsippany show, in October, I will make every effort to attend, though I won't have a table. I'll bring some show and tell stuff, too. smile.gif

Great coin, John. Also, I don't think that is a bad picture at all. What are you color blind? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Oddly, this 36-D reminds me of another I'm somewhat familiar with...

Bruce, Paul and Jeremy, thanks for kind words.

Tom, I’ve picked up a few goodies since the last time we saw each other and I’m looking forward to seeing you again so I can show them to you. Jeremy had a few really nice coins with him at the last Parsippany show, and I’m sure he can’t wait to show them to you also.

Jom, Thanks for your comments. This is the coin that I had told you I was waiting for. I bought it sight unseen, but from a dealer that I have bought a number of coins from over the years and I have never been disappointed with a coin he has sent to me. When he told me how nice it was, I told him to send it to me. I'm glad I did! yay.gif

Your ‘36d does look very similar to my coin, but the surfaces on my coin have that shiny proof like look to them that you told me you don’t really care for.

Branch mint proof? 893whatthe.gif

Actually, your pic doesn't make it look proof-like. Is that why you didn't like the shot you took?

One of these days we'll meet up and we'll have a Buffalo "sharing" day....just like Kindergarten. cloud9.gif

Not really. I’m not saying that the coin IS proof like, just that the surfaces are very smooth and shiny giving it a proof like look, in my mind at least. The reason I’m not happy with the image is because I can’t seem to capture all the colors, luster, and surface qualities that give the coin its ‘overall’ true look at the same time. confused-smiley-013.gif

I like it! Great coin! Congrats to you! Your coin has given me an idea! Hey, what happen to the "idea" emoticon guy?

As for camera shots, I'm having the same problem, getting the camera to see what you and I see! frustrated.gif

Assuming your camera is up to snuff try different lighting. I use an OTT bulb...as was Shylock's suggestion to me. If it is an NGC coin you will no doubt run into more problems with lighting. The white surface will cause either the shutter to be too fast or close the iris too much. You'll need to learn your camera's manual mode VERY well.

Hoot can come if he brings the spray paint. After all, how else am I going to show you the fine art of "coloring" coins? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

John,

Thanks for sharing your beautifully toned Buff. I really enjoy seeing high end, attractively toned, Buff and Liberty Nickels because in addition to being beautiful, they are quite scarce.

I've seen a few of Jom's Buffs, and I'll bet Caitlin has a set of them that is drop dead gorgeous. I have a really nice 38D, but that's it.

Elcontador,

It’s nice to hear from you, and thanks for your comments! If you’re interested, you can see the rest of my buff’s by clicking on the link in my sig line. I have images and descriptions for each coin.

Of course, if you really like nice Buffalo’s you have to check out Hoot’s set. He has photos and great descriptions for every coin as well.

Unfortunately, I have never seen any of Caitlin’s coins, but I agree that Jom has some real nice coins also.

Caitlin has some beautiful Buffs. We spent an afternoon together at an auction up in Maine and passed coins back and forth as we were being outbid on all the lots.

Thank you for the honorable mention John! smile.gif I'm in Great company.

Now Caitlin has sold more beautiful buffs than I'll ever own! Her occasional correspondence is usually enough to make me dizzy. Kinda like looking at your set, John! cloud9.gif
