Interesting reading:

 

“The Fort Pierce American Gold Find” by Carl J. Clausen, The Florida Historical Quarterly, July, 1968.

 

$23,000 in gold and silver coin intended for military payroll in 1857, Ft. Pierce, FL, Indian River inlet.

The article is online through JSTOR, if you or your library has a log-in. One may be able to read the article online by joining JSTOR, which may be free.

 

My local public library has a lot of digital resources, including EBSCO Academic Premier, but doesn't seem to be able to retrieve the article.

 

I may be able to get a copy by visiting a branch of the New York Public Library, which I may get to do next week.

 

 

edited to add: For those who are interested, QDB devotes a half-page to this treasure trove on page 84 of his Double Eagle Red Book.
