New 2005 Jefferson designs posted

I like these designs. I do believe the mintmark should have been placed just to the right of the date, instead of below Liberty. It would have been less intrusive there.

Unfortunately, the requirements of mass coining will compel the Mint's sculptor-engravers to alter the treatment of Jefferson's bust from that shown in the graphic art. There will be a trough between the bust and the rim at left to reduce die stress and maximize the number of possible strikes. This will weaken the boldness of the art as submitted. Other than that, the actual coins should be able to retain the character of the originals.

WOW William,

I can PREDICT many flaws on this design. A spiked nose or chin for Jefferson on the obverse, and on the reverse I am afraid to mention that one. Remember you heard it here first!!!

Great designs, although I think that the second design of the view of the Pacific Ocean and how important that was to L&C will be lost on most people.

Although I agree with what Dave Lange has to say, I also think that the design will be so flat that the rim will naturally be higher than the bust portrait. Therefore, I'm not sure that the trough will be needed. 893whatthe.gif Sad. Even so, I really like the portrait that they picked.

Another buffalo nickel!!! cloud9.gif

My thoughts:

1) I'm loving the Buffalo comming back ! headbang.gif

(BTW- Is it just my eyes or does anyone else notice that thing underneath the Buffalo. Right where the proff lighting interacts light/dark. I hope that's not what I think it is 893whatthe.gifscrewy.gif)

2) I don't know what to think about the redesign of the obverse. It will make the coin look more realistic, but it is sure a shocker at first. I'm going to have to see one in my hand before I can decide if I like it or not. I'm gonna agree with errorist and say there is going to be some minting problems with this new obverse design.

3) Enough with Lewis and Clark already. Both the 2004 nickels commerated them, it's time to move on. Sure they played an important part in history, but I think the second half of 2005 design, is a waste. They could have designed something better, or even better yet why not just keep the Buffalo.

An accurate rendering of a male bison. I really didn't even notice it til topsman mentioned it.

Still, not near as bad as MadMartys icon on PCGS! 27_laughing.gif

It looks odd to me. Shouldn't the ocean be on the other side of the mountain if it is the Pacific? confused.gif

The bison on the original buffalo nickel was a male. Get over it. The male was chosen in part as a show of strength.

As for the Lewis and Clark designs, that was the entire occasion for the nickels of the second half of 2004 and all of 2005. And the first nickel of 2004 (Jefferson Peace Medal design) was commemorating the Louisiana Purchase, not Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery. The unfortunate aspect of the reverse design choice for the PM nickel is that it was taken from the Jefferson Peace Medals that were handed out by L&C. But I guess that the ties to both the Louisiana Purchase and the L&C expedition could be seen as a bonus.

The two new designs this year and the two designs for next year are all for the express purpose of commemorating the bicentennial of the Lewis and clark expedition which was launched by Jefferson.

There will be a new design of the regular Jefferson nickel with a redesigned Monticello on the reverse and probably a redesigned Jefferson on the obverse. It wouldn't be surprising if next year's obverse portrait would become the standard for the series.

I certainly welcome the change, however they look more like Medals or Gallery Mint copies. Perhaps my eyes just havent adjusted to newfound creativity.

That being said, I do like them. Maybe there will be another run on prices of the original buffalo nickels.
