Achaea, Isabelle de Villehardouin, AD 1297-1301

Just added this one to my collection of Crusader coins. Uncommon ruler, slightly rare. Isabelle de Villehardouin ruled as Princess of Achaea from 1297 - 1301. (Achaea was in what is now Greece and was "on the way" to the Holy Land) The obverse states + YSABELLA P*ACH (Isabella, Princess of Achaea) surrounding a short cross. The reverse shows the "Castle Tournois" surrounded by *DE CLARENCIA (of Glarentza). One of the few medieval coins minted under female authority.

Is the reverse device that looks like this:

o /\ o

|___|

o----o

really a castle? Pretty crude but easy to make with just two punches as above.

It seems to be quite common theme on the crusader coins and medieval coins in general.

Yea, several series use that same designed castle.

Here is one with the Tower of David,

P.S. I'm thinking about buying that coin. I like the patina, and, it would be hard to upgrade that one, considering the crudeness of many Crustader (tj-ism) coins.

I think that's an attractive coin. Well centered, nice detail with the original crust. How's the price?

Asking $160.00. I haven't found very many examples to compare the price to. Good dealer though, right in the heart of Jerusalem, and well known in the business, so, I'm guessing its fair, but I'm not jumping on it just yet.

Sure, they're pretty cool. When I send e-mails at work I sometimes wish they had emoticons to help communicate my intent.

My favorite is the shrug: confused-smiley-013.gif

I like this one: juggle.gif but can never figure out how to work him in.

juggle.gif means you're waiting for something, like for a reply or a reaction. duh. For example:

Wonder when Thing will get reinstated on the water cooler? juggle.gif (juggles for thousand years)

By George, I think Jammin's got it.

How 'bout this one:

Wonder when Thing will tire of crustader coins that look like they were found in an old lava flow... juggle.gifconfused-smiley-013.gif

(note the sublime combination of juggle/shrug.)

I've never tired of TJ, that looks like he was found in a toilet bowl. (notice the rhyme and verse of "lava flow" and "toilet bowl". juggle.gif

Email me a picture of Paxil and I'll put him on the front page and make him the Official PCGS Sucks mascot.

Other than that, with everything going on in my life right now, I won't even think of that site for at least 6 months.

Arrived in the mail from Jerusalem today. Great coin, the patina really makes the coin. headbang.gif

Glad to here you're happy with it!

Have any themes emerger on your Crustador (sorry) coin collection? Migrating towards any particular sub set of rulers, time period, or stuff like that?

Hey JamminJ. Not narrowing it down yet. I like the Kingdom of Jerusalem series though. I think Crusader coins in general provide the opprounity to go after coins from all the different States/Crusaders in hope of getting a close to complete collection of Crusader coins (not counting varities of course).

Oh yea, I am trying to locate an example of a fractional denier of Raymond of Poitier, CCS 2nd edition, page 204, 18 -2. It has the famous "holy grail" on the reverse. Do you know of any other coins that portray the holy grail??? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif
