value of 1858 SILVER THREE CENT PIECE F

41 posts in this topic

Hi. Can someone tell me what a decent valus of a 3 cent piece is? I have already been outbid and I want to know if I am really stupid to keep going. Please look and give me your opinion. Thanks

coin here

Someone asked me last night on this forum why I wanted this coin, are these type of coins not a good purchase. By that I mean the older coins that dont exist anymore like the 3 cent Thanks for all of your knowledge. You will never know how much all of you have already saved me. grin.gif

Will numismedia list it as $29 bucks in Fine condition. I don't collect the 3 cent silvers so I can't tell you how it grades though there is some decent detail so I would imagine the grading is close.

I am not sure about this one though since to me it looks like it might have been cleaned and retoned. I can't say it has with 100% accuracy since it could be original, but the scans give me that first impression.

I would say if you like the coin then you haven't paid too much for it yet. What I typically do is look at completed auctions on Ebay to see what others have been paying for similar coins.........that will give you more of a fair market value VS the price guides.

I wouldn't go higher than $15 bucks on that coin as I am sure their are nicer examples available out there for that kind of money.

Good Luck!!

the coin could go as high as F -15 The coin does not looked cleaned at all becuase I can't see any hairlines, it just looks like bad lighting on the coin. $15.00 plus shipping would be good for the coin...

i cant comment about the specific type two 1858 three cent silver coin in the ebay auction as i need to see the coin in person sight seen to give you my novice opinion on the coin

but anyone who tells you that

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"""""why I wanted this coin, are these type of coins not a good purchase.""""

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

is in my opinion totally devil.gif off base devil.gif in their 893whatthe.gif comments to you

and in my opinion any type two three cent silver coin with at least decent eye appeal to exceptional and correctly graded original non damaged coin is a great value/opportunity in a grade of fine to gem unc.!!

Someone asked me last night on this forum why I wanted this coin, are these type of coins not a good purchase.

Let me clear up any misunderstanding here, because I was the person who asked Melanie why this was a coin she was after. I can see from Michael's post already that the inadvertant misrepresentation of what I had asked has already started. Melanie had previously stated

For instance I have been bidding (and losing) on 1868 3 cent pieces.
and she also made clear that she was new to coins. So, being somewhat experienced in numismatics, I asked her why she was looking to buy that particular coin. I wasn't making a value judgement on the series, neither was I disparaging the date selected. I was just curious as to why a new collector wanted a specific date that happens also to be one of the more expensive dates. My thinking was that perhaps this date had important family significance and I thought perhaps Melanie would like to share her story about it.

As for my opinion on three cent silvers, well, I think they are cool! thumbsup2.gif I even own some myself. Also, as for a collector wanting to buy three cent silvers, all I have to say is to try to buy problem-free coins for a reasonable price. I have written on my web site

Buy what you like with money you can afford to lose
and I think that that is an excellent thing to keep in mind.

Please also note that I am not annoyed, angry, bent, mad, whatever at anyone in this thread. I just want to nip in the bud any potential misunderstanding as to what I actually wrote and how that might have been inadvertantly misrepresented. thumbsup2.gif

The ebay auction makes the coin look waaaaay too bright for the amount of wear that it has. This might simply be due to the amount of light that the seller used to acquire the image. Alternatively, this could be a coin that had seen a previous cleaning and has not darkened back down sufficiently.

In that case, TomB must be a nany poo head. I have it on great authority that he owns a really nice near superb gem MS 3CS.

One thing I'm curious, though... The thread title is of 1858, but one of the posts is of 1868. ???

well tomb as the old saying goes be kind and good and you will always get your reward screwed devil.gifflamed.gif

tomb i see what you where saying and how it got totally twisted around this is why i hate to give any interviews to any commercial media as usually your words can be totally turned around on you and you get totally misquoted on what you said and this is not good or bad just the way it is unfortunately so 893frustrated.gif

TomB, I didn't realize that when I quoted part of our conversation it would be mistook. I am soooooooo terribly sorry. To everyone else who has so kindly helped me, such as TomB, I should have explained that the I am new and I was just asking if it was stupid to want a coin that doesn't exist, 1868 or 1858 now I dont remember I have been outbid on so many ones. TomB was just asking why I wanted it and I who don't have a good reason or personal story was in turn just asking if it wasn't a good choice in general. I never meant, nor did I think that how I wrote it made someone look uncaring because he wasn't. Please accept my apologies for anything I did wrong. I will be more careful next time. My point was the three piece is sooooooo beautiful, it is something I have never seen and someone from another time used it. That is awesome to me. Buffalo's, Indians, Barbers all are new to me.

My quick story:

I was a stupid kid who found my father's coin collection, only I didn't know it was a collection and basically I spent it all. 2 army ammo boxes full. Mostly was silver dollars, half dollars, oh I don't know what all it was I was a kid. Now I am 34 and whenever I find a coin I give it to him as a payback. I am determined to rebuild his collection with wonderful, classy, old silver and whatever else I can find of value. But I want to do it right with graded coins or coins that are valuable. Also with coins or bonds from his childhood. He talks about the war where they took all of their metal so I bought a bunch of 1943 steel pennies. In my pursuit I have found coins that I like such as the 3 cent piece and others. I also remember him talking about somekind of war bond they had to use to buy sugar and stuff if I could find them I would sell my car to buy it for him for sentimental value. Over the years I have given him every silver dollar I found and it always brings a tear to his eye because he forgave me a long time ago. He has no idea that this year I am serious and have already purchased hundreds of dollars worth of coins that I will give him for Christmas. I know I have probably gotten ripped off but now I am more cautious and ask ya'll questions. So yes this is personal to me and it means more to me then $$$ and somewhere along the line I inherited my fathers love of coins.

There are no apologies necessary from anyone on the boards (except maybe from Hoot? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif893scratchchin-thumb.gif893scratchchin-thumb.gif) as this was an honest miscommunication between all of us. This is one of the great drawbacks of the internet because things look so sterile in print (like Hoot? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif893scratchchin-thumb.gif893scratchchin-thumb.gif) that it is sometimes difficult to tell how something is written.

So, please continue to post. Please continue to ask questions. I am certain that the many fine numismatists on this board will be happy to help (even Hoot? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif893scratchchin-thumb.gif893scratchchin-thumb.gif) every chance they get. I am also certain that your father is quite touched by your devotion.

Now, has anyone seen that pillowcase of acid-date Buffalos, I have an important appointment with those! Hey Hoot...where are you... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif893scratchchin-thumb.gif893scratchchin-thumb.gif

And how do I get onboard the Hoot-bashing band wagon? screwy.gif Is it an exclusive club or sumpting?

But seriously, great story, MelMcBee! Very cool! thumbsup2.gif

p.s. Melanie, I just saw that you're a CT tech. Me too. Great to have you on the boards! As TomB said, the board members here are extremely helpful and are not spiteful like other forums. Well, except for that Hoot character. 27_laughing.gif Sorry, but that was my initiation into the new, exclusive Hoot-bashing club. EVP made me do it. 893whatthe.gif

Melanie,

I never did welcome you here. Please consider this post as such and allow me to tell you a little bit about some of the board members from the perspective of this little melonhead...

EZ_E/Viktor/Mr. Yuk: lover of prehistoric, megabeast-sized canines, hard-working and a good guy on the inside. Med-tech.

Hoot/Mark: has very strange dreams of a certain oddball in the industry, and (understandably) thinks of warm milk regarding another. Fondness for nickel coinage because that metal is almost as hard as his melon. Only redeeming quality: dog lover too. Research scientist who needs to shave and prefers a temp of ZERO KELVIN.

Oldtrader/Charles: been around forever, and collected coins with da Vinci. Has forgotten more than I'll ever learn.

GMarguli/Greg/Mean+Evil: his mailing address # is 666, for obvious reasons. Collects darkside as well as the lightside. Does the nasty with His Royal Highness. Only redeeming quality: ???

JamminJ/James: Very nice guy, but darksider (mostly). Don't know why he's friends with Mean+Evil.

TomB/Tom: stand-in for Mike Brady character, until the real actor died. Now, he passes himself off as the real thing. Doesn't know diddly about coins, but is very articulate and can fake it very well. Research scientist and cat lover. Doesn't care much for dogs though -- what a friggin' loser!

Jom/John: Good guy, serious. Likes A/T Buffalo 5c pieces. Doesn't know how to crack slabs except by throwing them against a hard surface.

Arch: mod and chief IT guy here. Has a good sense of humor. He's the crazy pseudo-transsexual guy in Silence of the Lambs. Redeeming quality: he puts up with a lot from us.

Dena: mod and Her Royal Highness around here. Used to pal around with us, but now contends with expanding family responsibilities. Quite a lady if you ever get to meet her.

There are many others. Please don't be offended if I didn't mention you, but I can't list everyone...

I almost forgot: stay away from Hoot. I suspect he's a carrier of some highly contagious disease. Every time he and I have been in the same timezone, I've been become very ill. I suspect him. Stay away from him.

Thank you for the welcome. I have already been introduced to some of the greats you have mentioned through this board. BTW you are hilarious! As you have seen in my previous posts I have no knowledge about coins except I love the way they look.

However, I am no great scientist but my specialties are windows security, antivirus, spyware, trojan and so forth removal. This is my hobbie only, cleaning up infected computers. My job to earn a living is Radiology/Cat Scan 3p-11pm shift which means I deal with all trauma, vent patients, inpatients and so forth. As far as hoot being contagious, my immune system is very high due to exposures I received at work. My point is if anyone has a question about infected computers I can either help or send you to where you need to go online to get help. I am not a complete insufficiently_thoughtful_person ( I am blond though) just ignorant in coins.

As I always say ya'll are the greatest cloud9.gif

I like EVP's synopsis of board members and I think that perhaps Hoot is biologically infecting his laptop and, after having electronic intercourse with Hoot via the web, EVP is then succumbing to the techno-biological malady. This theory contends that the plague (Hootus Infectus Maximus to us science-type folks) can only be spread through one time zone because of a synchronization glitch. Therefore, EVP, if you simply set your computer clock to some random time you can avoid coming down with this nasty syndrome. 893whatthe.gif

melmcbee - "I also remember him talking about somekind of war bond they had to use to buy sugar and stuff if I could find them I would sell my car to buy it for him for sentimental value."

I may have something that you're looking for. I purchased a book of WWII ration stamps a few years ago. They are not in perfect shape, but they're pretty neat. I wouln't make you sell your car for them, but I would require that you kill TomB, EVP, EZ_E, jom, and perhaps a few others. PM me if you wish to discuss.

melmcbee -

Please remember that TomB has more hair growing on the inside of his head than the Jackson 5 had growing on the outside of their collective heads in their Motown years. 893whatthe.gif And he's got a lot of hair on the outside to boot. In fact, I'd love to boot him. blush.gif

EVP was captured and taken hostage by TDN (tradedollarnut) years ago on one of TDN's many excursions to southeast Asia to set up early dollar counterfeiting operations. He cannot survive in temperatures lower than 1000 degrees F and catches colds like his beloved Mets catch fly balls. (Well, maybe that wasn't a good analogy.) Anyway, he gets so wound up in knots before traveling to shows that he always arrives sick, then blames me. TDN has to beat him severely in order to control his behavior on the bourse, and he makes EVP look at video tapes of David Hall grading coins in order to calm him. And TDN wears leather thongs.

EZ_E is nothing more than a hair ball coughed up by his part-dog, part-wooly rhinoceros.

jom is a master spray painter. What more is there to say?

And not to drag others into this (particularly), but you may have noticed that Wihlborg likes to steal images from other web sites, then claim the coin is his.

Greg the Evil One and JamminJ are the same entity reflected in the natural duality that is the fabric of all deities. They (It) are (is) simply dangerous.

michael is the only numismatist of any note around here, but he's insane, as he likes impaired proof coinage. He also likes to go to shows and view raw coins, fingerprinting them as he goes, smearing olive oil on their surfaces from the great food he packs around. Subversive.

Oh, I'll quit. sorry.gif

At least I got to have an organism named after me! (They already named Tom: [!@#%^&^] neanderthalensis pubushairii.

Oh, and chinook is a salmon - really. Collects plutonium-forged coins in the Pacific Northwest near Hanford site. Bad sense of humor and likes to neg people on eBay. Stay away - he's mean.

There are definitely others...
