Pondering selling some stuff.....opinions wanted

14 posts in this topic

Lately I've been pondering selling pretty much my entire collection of Key date material since the prices have risen to insane levels and have made it not very enjoyable to try and buy new pieces any longer.

I've thought of selling and then holding onto the $$$$$$ and hope for the bubble to burst and then jump back in at that time.

I don't have any "top pops" or stuff like that but I do have what I would call very collectible grades of various series such as....

PCGS AU50 S3 1856 FE

PCGS 1918/7D 5c (Formerly anacs G6 and still a solid G6 in my book)

PCGS VF35 1877 IHC

PCGS 63RB SVDB

ANACS 63RB 55/55

etc, etc, etc....

any opinions? I'm nuts? You're nuts? We all are?

We're all nuts, but don't think that you'll hold on to those $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. One thing or another wil whittle away at it...

Goose! Whats up amigo? Personally, I would sell sell sell. I think U.S. coins have been bringing stoopid money for quite some time now, and that is bound to end. BUT, then again, many coins I've sold in the past, I've come to regret selling down the line. Hell, sell those and invest in something that is cheap now, but you think might go up.

Now is probably a good time to thin out the collection. If you absolutely love the coins then hang onto them as you'll regret selling no matter how strong the prices. However, if they're more ho-hum nice selling is a good idea. Another way to look at it is to think "are these the absolute best coins I can get for the money they'll bring?"

My US coin clllection is currently down to 3 pieces which I cannot bear to part with.

Well, I'd part with the most replaceable coins first. The 1877 IHC, 55/55, 09-s vdb are the first three on that list that could be replaced if sold, at any show. Those coins may be "keys" of sorts, but they can easily be found at any decent sized show. Ebay would be a strong consideration for these.

The '56 flyer you may want to consider an auction venue, but make sure they don't have 5 examples going off at the same time, which can happen at a larger venue.

The 18/7-d buffalo is tougher to find, and you should be able to sell that coin privately for strong money. I would imagine Ebay could be a good spot for that coin also.

Good luck Goose!

If your objective was to make money on these coins, this may be the time to sell the coins. Prices are strong, and they can get stronger, or they can go in the tank. Take advantage of the strong market, or hold out? Decisions, decisions, decisions........:)

I happen to think we're all nuts since we all pay a premium for money! foreheadslap.gif As for a selling strategy, I think bigd5 has a very good point about selling the pieces first, that you can replace the easiest. Of course, it would take lots of dedication to make certain that the new-found money didn't find a way to siphon itself off. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Don't leave us hanging like that JamminJ. What three coins are they?

The first one is a keeper for sentimental reasons as it was a graduation gift from my mom: 1908 No Motto $20 Saint in a PCGS AU58 holder.

The second is another sentimental coin but also unusually nice: an 1879-CC (clear CC) Morgan in a PCGS XF45 holder. This coin was pulled from circulation by my great uncle James (for whom I was named) in the 1930s. I inherited from him when he died in 1982. I showed it to my local dealer and his response was "well, if you ever find out Uncle Jim was a pedophile or something and want to sell the coin bring it back..."

The third is an 1834 Bust Quarter in a PCGS AU53 holder. Rim toned and eye appealing it was one of the first certified coins I bought.

I'll hunt around for some pictures.

Goose,

I had been pondering the same question for the past few months. I recently decided to consign about 1/3 of my collection with ANR for the FUN show. I also plan on sitting on the $$$ but I know it will be very difficult to do.

JamminJ, Great stories. All of those coins are keepers.

John, I think it's an excellent time to "cash out". I am doing just that with my top client's collection right now. I don't think you're nuts at all! Actually, it's an advantage that your key-date coins are "nice", but not "pop top". There's a real shortage of affordable keys right now.

James

PS: Keep me in mind!

I going to talk to the wife about it soon and see what she thinks. I had jokingly told her I was going to buy a new convertible Vette with the $ a while back.

That did not go over too well. I believe the reply I had was "You'd better have room to (Can't say it here) sleep in it. grin.gif

I think I would sell any of them worth 500 or less on ebay and probably consign the rest to someone.

thanks for all the input.
