What to use to clean copper coins?

2 posts in this topic

I've just begun to update the old coin collection and noticed a lot of black crud on the Lincoln cents in the old "Whitman blue folders". What can I use to clean my coins without damaging and devaluing them?

Mike,

I don't know of any safe ways to "clean" copper. Cleaning copper will always result in changing the color to an unnatural appearance, therefore it is not recommended. On the other hand, "conservation" of copper coins where residues are being carefully removed without actually "cleaning" (by way of abrasive techniques that utilize harsh chemical agents) the coin are sometimes beneficial but should be performed by a professional

May I suggest NCS?

PS- Thanks for the question. I encourage you and others to make use of the "Ask NCS" forum for questions of this nature.
