In school, we had a milk vending machine in the cafeteria that dispensed white or chocolate milk cartons, the price, 2 cents. (the remainder was subsidized) Only problem then was the fact that the ornery vending machine would not accept those steelie pennies found in ordinary pocket change back then, so, even though you had 2c you had to exchange with someone who had a copper cent.

Thanks for the post, I bought an album full of lincolns at an estate sale several years ago that had a nice steel cent with this same toning, I hadn't seen anything like it and thought it may be artificial. Maybe I will send it in.

Thanks guys!

Woodenjefferson- Cool story! Did your Milk Machines give the Discount Double Check? ;) GO LIONS!

Coinman- I started a 20th century Type Set in Rainbow colors about 3 years ago. I was told I would never find a Rainbow toned Steelie and the people that told me that were right! So I scrapped that Idea because I have OCD and wasnt going to have an untoned coin in a toned coin set! This is the first I have EVER seen. So the Market for these is the price I paid I suppose...... $140..... And IMO thats a steal!

I thought I found some oneday as well but they were replated. I hope you scored some real deals, but before getting them graded make sure there not replated

I think I had one similar (but lower grade), but I thought it was on a reprocessed coin

I guess I should look closer if I ever see any again

cool pastel colors, so now we have all seen a picture of one.

I will go dig it out of the safe and see if I can photograph it. What should I be looking for if it's re-plated?

Let's see it. Nick, dimefreak's coin is not plated. Your coin could be just as OK. They electroplate these, acid-dip them, apply chemicals, they all look a little different.

I cannot photo this sucker and capture the toning. The colors are spot on to DF's but I will say the feilds look suspicious to me. They are kind of, for a lack of better term "pitty". I only have one other steel cent to compare it to and it has a much smoother surface but the luster and overall look in color is the same.

I have the same feeling as when I first got it, the colors look great but something just isn't right with it. But that's just my gut feeling, I know very little about steel cents and what they should look like. Does anybody have photos of a plated cent or reprocessed cent, or any descriptions of what either looks like.

This is a really bad job.... some people are much better at it.and it wont be peeling off like on this coin. They reprocess them for higher grade. I dont believe there intention is for toning. If it is reprocessed lucky for you it was just in an album that I assume you didnt pay extra for toning. The one I thought I found was in one of those type set things you hang on your wall. It was a beautiful oak showcase in an oval shape. I was so giddy to buy the thing just for that cent. When I took the back of there was peeling :tonofbricks:

I know, I know, I ought to be in pictures. Listen, enough of the harassment, a guy can only take so much. These are the best I can do of one of the kid's electroplated steelies. This is what they look like (well, basically, if you've got a photographer like me):
