Will NGC slab my soon to be world class Crusader Coin collection?

33 posts in this topic

Do they slab these types of coins, and, will the fact that one of their forum moderators has placed restrictions on my user account due to his own political beliefs mean NGC won't accept my $ if they do indeed slab these coins?

NGC will not slab that coin. First off, it has environmental damage from being buried for a long time. NGC also has limits on how early of a coin will they slab. What this actual date is is unknown. I guess around late 1400's is the cutoff.

Thanks g-man. I'll take the money I was going to spend on slabbing them and give it to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth! In all seriousness, is there a grading service (respectable) that would slab the coins? I'm beginning to wonder if it would even be worth while to slab them. I know ICG slabs some ancients. Any opinions on them? I could clean the coin, but I prefer an uncleaned or a nice earthen patina when possible.

They're not mine, I found them in a post across the street.

I just put them up as examples of medieval coins that NGC does slab. I know Greg has had a few sent back as "ineigible types" so I was hoping someone could answer definitively what NGC does and does not slab as far as medieval coins go.

Perhaps their World Coin Expert can give us a definate answer on what would be slabbed and wouldn't be slabbed as into date/condition. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif THESE are the questions that need to be answered.

What about these?

NGC seems inconsistent with medieval coins.

893frustrated.gifThe best I can guess is that there are several reference books that list these British coins and that is why they are graded. I have see some gold from the 1100's graded, but I don't remember which country.

I think that was GDJSMP's gold French coin which was discussed in this thread. I guess Armenia just doesn't cut it.

Perhaps a post on the Ask NGC forum would clear this up. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Ok, I asked in the ask NGC forum. It feels really good to be an upstanding and contributing member of these forums. Perhaps I can eventually meet some of the board members and employees of NGC at some of the major coin shows. I would LOVE to see Arch demonstrate some of his Kung Fu assassin moves. If they do slab these types of coins they will be getting some of my hard earned $. I'll post the response in this thread when and if it is made available.

Well, here is the response

"Sorry, but we are not slabbing pieces that early at this time"

But, this confuses me even more, given the images of the slabs that JamminJ posted. Many Crusader coins are from that time era, and, those were obviously slabbed/graded by NGC confused-smiley-013.gif

I posted a follow up question on a specific cut off date, and, I asked if it could just be that particular series of coins isn't a candidate at this time.

Funny, they don't say that for me? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif Maybe it has to do with the person asking the question. hi.gif

This is sad, did you know Thing can't even READ the Water Cooler, let alone post to it? I feel like petitioning Arch to at least let him be able to read it.

JamminJ, I purchased some Duchy of Athens Crusader coins today. 893applaud-thumb.gif

thumbsup2.gif Make sure you get some pictures up once you have them in hand.

Did you find any good books on medieval coins yet?

I ordered Alex G. Malloy's 2nd Edition of Coins of the Crusader states. Should be here friday. I'm trying to find some more reference material. I want to amass a pretty good library, I'm just not sure if there are very many books out there specifically dealing with Crusader coinage.

I'd be surprised if there were many books on crusader coins, the whole medieval era seems overlooked. Old auction catalogs, if you can find them, might be a good place to get some attribution help.

NGC does not grade or most coins of the middle ages, including crusader coins. We do not have anyone on staff expert enough to tackle this topic. We will do English coins from William the Conquerer onward. Officially, in our literature, the start date for world coins is 1700. Prior to this date, we do coins on a case by case basis because of holdering problems etc. Obviously, we try our best to accommodate the submitters whenever possible. If anyone has a question about submitting a particular item they can contact us.

Thanks for the info KKrah. Hopefully, in the future, NGC might consider expanding to include these coins, and other ancient coins. There is still no reputable grading/authentication company providing a service for ancients, and I think if either PCGS or NGC would do this, it would prove profitable. But then again, I might not know what the hell I'm talking about. 893scratchchin-thumb.gifsmile.gif I would hope though, that this forum could be made into World Coins/Ancients. I know there are members of this board would could provide excellent information for people.

Nothing preventing you from posting away with mediaval and ancient coins. I'm interested, and actually have three ancients in my collection - two Roman and one Parthian. I'd also like to add one of those neat looking gold Byzantium coins.

Hey JJ, I have a large Byzantine collection, but no gold. I didn't even realize the Crusaders had gold coinage until I saw some on CNG's website. Reasonable price too. Some of the Gold Christ portrait coins from the Byzantine empire are really cool. Harlan J. Berk always has some nice ones. I really like ancient Greek coins the best, as far as design/beauty/history, but, the majority of them are too expensive for my collecting habits.

Something like this would be a good addition to my collection:

Most of my exposure to Byzantine stuff is at a local coin shop. Their bid board offers some awfly cool looking ancinet coins, I'm waiting for the one that just jumps out at me and screams "take me home!"

Your right about the Crusader gold coins on CNG, they look reasonably priced to me. I tried to get harlan Berk to send me an image of a coin he offered on his website but he never responded to my inquiry. I tend to avoid dealers with service like that.

Ancients are a sideline for me these days by they could be what I move onto if I tire of the German/HRE stuff that really jazzes me now.
