Inaugural TCCS Meeting

12 posts in this topic

The inaugural meeting of the Toned Coin Collectors Society was, in one word - "Vibrant"

I think we have at least 20 Founders (Founders are those Collectors and Dealers willing to make a 1 time contribution of $250 as seed money to get this Organization off to a solid start). After our meeting a number of members who initially paid the 1st years' dues decided that they wanted to be Founders, not just regular members. Most major Toned Coins Dealers have elected to be Founders, so we are off to a great start. Based on the response at our inaugural meeting, I believe that this will be a premier coin organization that will be beneficial for all collectors and dealers of Toned Coins.

The “Show Off Your Toners” Contest was, to “coin a phrase” - Very Colorful! In fact spectacularly so. Even though MS68 violated the carefully thought out rules and entered 4 toned commerative coins, they were so beautiful that every one waived the single coin rule, just so we could see them.

Our Winners were:

19th Century: Tom Turissini (Big Moose) - a gorgeous 1881-S Toned Morgan

20th Century: Jason Stevens (JBStevens) - a spectacular 1945-P Mercury Dime

Commerative: Dave Schweitz - (MS68)THE toned Oregon - ‘nuff said

Modern Coin: A tie! Dave Sands (Quarterjack) - a beautiful 1967 Kennedy Half

and Mark Ross (Merysu) - a spectacular 1970-S Roosevelt Dime

Best of Show: Tom Turissini’s wonderful 1881-S Toned Morgan edged out Dave Schweitz’s spectacular toned Oregon by 1 vote!

(probably because his 3 other toned comms siphoned off at least 4-5 votes as they were also monster toned coins)

Interim Officers:

Ron Sirna, President and Treasurer

Bryan Orsborn Vice President

Andy Kimmel, Secretary

Tom Turissini, Director

Stan Hatanaka, Director

Glenn Gilman, Director

Steve Pastorius, Director

Richard Abrahams, Director

The next regular membership meeting is scheduled for the FUN show to be held in Fort Lauderdale, FL in January, 2005 - Date and time to be announced.

There will be a regional meeting of the TCCS at the Long Beach show in September - Date and time to be announced. We may even try another "Show Off Your Toners" Contest.

On another note, I had a display of Toned Coins in the ANA Exhibit area, but unfortunately the lighting was not very good and you couldn't really see the colors of my toners unless you looked at them a little sideways to catch what little light there was available to reflect off of the coins. While at the show, I bought a few nice toners - actually a few too many - but one was a spectacular toned Peace dollar that more than one dealer tried to buy, but it's NFS!

(See my Pittsburgh toners thread for pictures)

Overall a great ANA, and a great start to our Toned Coin Collectors Society

Congratulations, it sounds like a great club!!!

I would think that 1967 Franklin Half would trump all the other coins hands down wink.gif

Well, you would have had to have seen the 81-S Morgan Dollar & Schweitz's Comms before you could reach that conclusion wink.gif - My Morgan Dollar was a very close second to Turissini's 81-S Morgan. Here's a picture of my Christmas tree - the picture doesn't do it justice, so I've asked another member who is better at imaging coins to see if he can capture the real look of this coin, which is awesome! Here's almost what it looks like! (Much brighter and more intense in real time)

Franklin halves were last minted in 1963. It's either a 1957 Franklin or a 1967 Kennedy.

As for Bruce's Trade Dollar, it is an awesome coin. Having been lucky enough to examine it in person, a picture cannot do it justice.

It's all done with fingernail polish. smirk.gif TDN's wife is an expert. She learned from EVP.

Bruce's trade Dollar is outstanding - we may have to create a separate category just for that coin in our next "Show-off your Toners Contest" BTW it's the ONLY TD that I've seen that has "textile" bag toning! Awesome! shocked.gif

(Remember to send in your Membership Application for the TCCS - non-members can't participate in our Toner "Show-off" )

EVP has lots of practice. The only drawback is making those poor little puppies hold still.....
