Two invoices back from NGC - ouch!

22 posts in this topic

I got two invoices back from NGC I was hoping that I'll get some MONSTER grades back, but what I received was a good ol' old fashion spanking.

INVOICE 1 (submitted in Baltimore)

1926-S Oregon MS63 (bought for $99, nice toning) was in old flip with a price of $15 shocked.gif

1927 5c MS66 - I was really hoping that this coin will get 67 there is not a single nick on it pic of coin

1939 proof set - the only good thing about is that it's housed in a multi coin holder, I took a real beating here I hoped that dime is a cam. Grades:

01c - PF64RD

05c - PF67 rev of 38 (the only bright spot)

10c - PF64

25c - PF64

50c - PF64

ouch here are the pics: proof set pic1

proof set pic2

These coins looked better than 64 to me!!!!

My moder submission did not do any better I went through several rolls of cents and picked the best examples (and I mean the best of the best):

The results are below

1959-D 1c - MS65RD

1959-D 1c - MS65RD

1959-D 1c - MS64RD

1962-D 1c - MS65RD

1960-D 1c large date - MS64RD

1960-D 1c large date - MS65RD

1960-D 1c large date - MS66RD

1960-D 1c large date - MS65RD

1960-D 1c large date - MS66RD

1960-D 1c large date - MS65RD

1960-D 1c large date - MS65RD

1958 MS62BN (It's a toned monster)

1965 5c MS66 (not a SMS coin)

1955-D 5c MS64 I was really hoping for FS

1969-D 50c BB - Damage (odd toning env. damage)

To summarize let me use a four letter word: 893censored-thumb.gif

The dime and half sure look like they have a nice light cameo to them. At the very least you should have received a * for them.

As for the copper, a lot of people think that NGC grades copper easier than PCGS. That is no longer true. Your coin has to be super to get MS67. The good/bad news is that the market prices still lag behind, so you can pick up some nice examples at a discount, but the bad is if you are the seller.

Don't feel too bad about the Buffalo however. It is VERY difficult to get a 67. It really has more to do with the luster (which is a very subtle attribute) especially on coins with little or no marks.

Nice coins there...the proof Walker some nice cameo to it. laugh.gif

Well hey, don't you recall that NGC is easy on grades? smirk.gif

I've had similar experiences of late, but I've known for a long time that NGC is tough on nickels.

Speaking of nickels, if you have a desire to be free of the '27, just PM me! grin.gif

The proof pics look like Jeff Werlins. Obviously they were well enough contrasted in hand that you hoped for a Cam designation on the dime. I like the look of the group, and I'd like them in a multi-holder even if I thought the grading was a little tough. NGC was IMO pretty picky on my last few invoices too, but sometimes I am too. Looks like a pretty solid submission.

That is a stunning coin!

And let me say that since I currently own NO Buffalo nickels, I should be first in line to buy it.

This is because Greg has gone over to the dark side. He has so abandoned U.S. coins that he deserves no consideration whatsoever. blush.gif Yes, he's a good fellow, but a traitor, and not even up to jom's meagre standards of buffalo nickel collecting. 893whatthe.gif

shocked.gif Don't listen to Hoot. I have a nice US collection that is 10X the value of my foreign stuff. Besides, me branching out into foreign goes to prove what a well rounded numismatist I am. Hoot on the other hand if narrow focused. Nothing but nickels. Myopic!

Besides, he has dipped coins in the past and very well might dip this coin! 893whatthe.gif

Nice looking coins, perhaps the proof pieces had a few hairlines on them? That is the only thing that I can think of since they have so much eye appeal, however, keep in mind that I do not have much expertise in proof coinage.

As for the Buffalo, it's a shame to see it come between such good board friends. Soooooooo...I'll be big about the entire thing and offer you the chance to ship it to me, without telling anyone, so that it doesn't cause any hard feelings. Thanks! thumbsup2.gifdevil.gif

Those proofs sure look nice; the cameo is a bit light but come on thay are a few years old. Super nice buffalo, are you thinking about trying it again?

Ok, enough with that '27 buffalo.

I should be able to see Sadysta1 at one of the local shows here, and get a peak at that '27 up close and personal.

At that point you west coasters don't have a shot. smile.gif

I've dipped french fries in a chocolate milkshake too! sumo.gif And as for the 10x value of Greg's U.S. stuff over the foreign material, we certainly have no idea that it's true - he's a darksider, you see. He probably has other collections too embarrassing to talk about. insane.gif

What you need is a little myopia. I'm so keenly focused on nickels that only I, of all these vultures around here, can TRULY appreciate that nickel! smile.gif

And please don't show it to Darin, as his east coast biases have him truly troubled. (Word has it when he visited Yellowstone that he actually tried to ride a bison! gossip.gif Tourists!

I can see the the voltures are circling around the buffalo. My parents are coming up north this weekend and my mom will bring the coins to me. Only then I'll be able to image them. Annd I'll show the nickel to BigD5 and the decision will be made there.

If you think that the 27 buffalo is PQ wait until I post the pic of the Oregon half

or that brown shocked.gif cent (hint: it's not brown AT ALL)
