An Old Indonesian Coin Question...

7 posts in this topic

This coin is from Indonesia (The Aceh province, I believe) is called a "Trumon Keping Token AH1250", and it is dated 1560. It is copper-colored and has a rooster on one side and what looks like a flower on the other side... The writing aroung the edges of the coin is most obviously in Sankrit. Can anyone tell me anything about this thingy? Any idea regarding the value?

Thanks in advance, fellas!

It looks pretty modern for a coin that is supposed to date from 1560..........are we sure it's from 1560, non of my Medieval's from that period are nearly as perfect as that coin???

1250 *is* the date, but only by ISLAMIC dating standards... 1250AH = something around 1859 A.D. You see, Muhammed came about just over 600 years after Christ did, so... well, just as the Christian world refers to Christ's year of birth for dating things on a yearly scale, so do Muslims refer to Muhammed's year of birth for dating things. So, you fellas were straight-up right -- no WAY is this as old as I thought. It is only around 150 years old by western standards. Thanks for the input, all!!

Your "coin" is from Indonesia - the Trumon region (north of Sumatra). It is a one Keping. These were token issues.

The date isn't 1250 or 1560 according to the calendar we are used to. It is dated AH Hejira 1250 or 1834 in years we know. On your coin, the date is misformed.

The obverse reads Land of the Malays - One Keping. The reverse reads Land of the Bugis - One Keping.

It is a rather common issue. You coin appears to be a high grade AU or perhaps even uncirculated. The coin catalogs at $10 in XF and $17.50 in uncirculated. My guess is a dealer would pay around $3-$8 for this coin.
