Nevadaman's FS Jefferson Nickel collection sells for $133002!!

If my adding is correct!

Hi everyone,

I'm back from Pittsburgh and what a sale it was for the Jefferson nickels! Just about everything sold for ridiculous prices! There were about a half dozon FS nickel bidders there and I got the chance to look over Steve Wells collection twice and made notes and it was one of the better sets that I have seen in awhile.

I ended up winning only one lot, the 1943-D, a very common date coin but the strike and the 6 steps are what sold me and the fact that I won it with a very modest $225 bid! About 30 other coins should have sold in the $50 to $125 range but the bidders just went nuts with the bidding. I was very interested in the 1946-S and from a personal view, it was one of the very few exceptional coins that could of went into my collection. When the bidding reached $770 that's when I started to bid but the auctioneer didn't see my hand and ended the bidding for that lot. A few lots later the guy told everyone to just holler if he misses any bids. Yeah right! Live and learn! This was the first auction of this magnitude that I have ever participated in, that coin will resurface, I hope!

Besides winning the one lot, I had the pleasure of meeting Ray Overby over a beer.

And he got the chance to see a few coins from my collection. How we met was through my 53-S. Someone pointed him out for me and I put that coin in his hand and said, "take a look at this one" and immediately he knew who I was and asked if I bought along the 81-P and of course, I had it with me. After an hour or so I told Ray that I had to hit the road which was an 11 hour drive for me and hit the road I did, right outside of Gary, Indiana, my front left tire blew out in the middle of 6:00 am traffic and that's another story. Stuck in Hammond, Indiana for the next 5 and a half hours, but thank God there was a U pull it apart junk car yard open (on Sunday) where I bought two used tires with the rims...............whoa, I'm getting off topic in my own thread! 27_laughing.gif

More later! laugh.gif

Interesting story Leo. Thanks for the post. I'll look for the prices realized sheet coming from that auction. Should provide a good laugh or cry. confused-smiley-013.gif

Great story Leo, (oh, the car part)....Wow, sounds like nickels are surely scorching.....But then again, what's a quarter of a million (give or take 8 thousand) for some cherry coins.

Thanks for the report....

Hi Hoot

Besides wanting to see the collection, I also had my hopes up in meeting Frank Corso but I later learned that he had changed his mind. Interestingly, a couple of lots that would have improved his collection did not sell. Perhaps the reserves were a bit too high for those coins or the Billy Wilder has collection may have came into play here, is my guess!

Hi Paul

What a story that would have been.........oh no, not another lost 1913 (53-S) nickel story! 893whatthe.gif

It was a very hairy situation on the interstate there for awhile, while changing that tire with semi-tractors bearing down the lane I was barely out of! I Thank God for the tow truck that showed up before I had the car jacked up, which was amazingly fast! There he was with the yellow lights flashing! He told me to move the car farther up the road which I did and he used his jack and we changed the tire! I asked him what I owed him but he didn't want anything but I put a twenty in his hand anyway and thanked him! When I think about what happen out there, I should of gave him $50! Another live and learn thing........next time..... buy 4 new tires before starting out! 27_laughing.gif

Leo,

Just got off the phone with Ray. Super nice guy and I'm sure you had a nice talk with him. If you remember back awhile, I posted a pic of a 67 58-D FS that Heritage auctioned with a arced die crack left of the steps. I then posted a pic of mine then you posted a pic of yours with the same DC. Remember? Also, you threaded the 39 DDR that was missed by the owner, ICG and Heritage (the one I got).

Well, I sent both to Ray for his perusal and let him see if he thought they would upgrade for his reg set. The 58 came back a 66FS and the 39 came back a 64FS (dropped 2 points from ICG holder). Ray was POed as he really thought it should be a 65 so resubmitted for pres review. Hall downgraded it again to a 62FS!!!

Now he's really pi**ed but nothing to do about it. So he's sending them back to me. We both think sending them in to NGC just to see what they get there is worth a try. Will post pics of both when I get them and let everyone grade compare with PCGS.

Haven't talked to Steve since his auction ended but I'm sure he's quite happy with the results. I know some didn't sell because of the reserve so will ask what he plans to do with them when next we talk. As for the hammer on the ones that did sell, I am in agreement with you. Seems FS Jeffs are starting to really get the action they deserve from collectors.

Many of his pre 1950 Jeffs sold for considerably more then same grade FS Jeffs I have kept track of. Especially the 41-D, 42, 42-S, 44-P, 45-D, 45-S. Not many, if any, records for lots of his MS65/66/67 grade post 1950 Jeffs.

Do you happen to know who picked up the 60-D and 61-D? At over $55,000 for both, quite an investment!

Hi David

If you send it back in 3 more times, it will come back in 3 other grades, believe me, it will! 27_laughing.gif I'll explain all that in about 27 days! 27_laughing.gif
