should I hold on to the old 1942-58 wheaties pennys?

18 posts in this topic

Hello, I looekd throught my penny to count them up and if found like 10-15 old penny coins with dates from 1942-58 would it be wise for me to hang on to them for they could be worth something some day?

Also i got like 5 half dallars and one silver dallar...

And one 1953 dime...

The Wheat cents usually sell for around 3c each. They amde billions of them, so these would have little chance of going up in value.

The 1953 dime is silver and if circulated worth around $.40

The half dollars if dated 1964-before are usually worth around $2 each. If 1965-1969 around $.70 and if dated later worth face value.

The silver dollar if 1878-1935 is likely worth $7. If 1971-78 around $1.25. If later face value.

If the Indian Head (Buffalo) have a date, they are worth $.35-up. No date are worth $.10

The 1980 SBA $ is worth a $1.

For cents, basically any one dated 1959-present is worth only face unless it is an error, variety, or ultra high grade.

welcome to the boards thumbsup2.gif and great coins you are starting to collect for face value! cloud9.gif

with the 100 year anniversary of the lincoln cent in 2009 and it almost cost one cent to make a copper washed zinc cent a wheat cent would be worth to keep if you find any

and maybe you can start to collect all the dates from 1909 up and then onto some other series that strikes your fancy!!

go to the public library and ask to see a copy of coin world and check out some coin books you might get bitten by the collecting bug 893applaud-thumb.gif

good luck and feel free to ask me any questions by private message on these boards i would be happy to be of assistance to you thumbsup2.gif

There are many ways to get started on a collection and a small hoard like what you have there is sometimes a start. You'll first need to get some idea of what coins exist and an idea of what they're worth. You can collect anything but if you set your sights too low than you'll quickly get bored and quit. For instance a collection of regular issue wheat cents from 1934 to 1958 would be quickly completed and present little challenge as all of these were made in large quantities and many survive. But the same collection including the varieties or all the issues in better grade will prove more difficult. There are challenging series in circulation right now but most collectors do buy most of their coins from dealers and other collectors.

Buy a Red Book or a new Coin World and study it a while. Decide which series you like and go after it. Ask any questions you can't get answers to and remember to help out the newbies along the way.

I love my wheaties! Not much collector value, but then again they are easy and very affordable to collect. And yes, I'm still waiting to see what happens in 2009 when a purposed designed change may take affect. Who knows, the wheaties might shoot up a bit in price. Speaking of this, 2009 should be an interesting year for the hobby, between a possible penny change, and the State Quarter program having ended in 2008.

But, yes that is a great start to the world of collecting. I would not spend those coins, just hang on to them, despite their lack of major value. They still hold a lot of history, are nice to enjoy, and pass down to future generations in your family.

To add personal experiences to one of your posts about coins in circulation, you would be suprised as to some of the valuable coins that still are in circulation, it is just a long shot to happen to discover them. Working at a large grocery store, I'm amazed at the coins I sometimes discover when I'm counting the cashier tills at night. Tons of wheaties, a few pre 1965 silver coins, indian head cents, a buffalo or merc once in a while, once I even found 2 Morgans, boy did I snatch those things out in a hurry for only a buck a piece. Aside from the wheaties I'd have to say the only reason *most* of these coins find they way back into circulation is because a little kid inherited his grandpa's coin collection and decided to buy some candy with it, not realizing how much the coins were actually worth.

Enough rambeling about me. Good luck with your collecting, hope to see you become a deticated member to the board and the hobby. If you do decide to become a more serious collector, just make sure to do some reading and research, before you start making any big purchases, there are many informative posts, and very helpful and knowledgable members on this board that will send you in the right direction.

Lookin at probably 15 - 20 cents on that one. From the front view it looks like a grade of good (which is actually the lowest grade). The grade often depends more on the detail of the wheat ears on the reverse side.
