Numismatic community in Southern California?

12 posts in this topic

My wife is thinking of accepting a job offer that will move us from Orlando, FL to Irvine, CA. She is worried that I won't have the same "coin community" that I have here. Mostly I think she is focusing on the FUN shows. I told her there is the Long Beach show, but I'm not really aware of much else.

I think she should take it (excellent opportunity fot her) but maybe you folks can help me alleviate her "coin community" worry.

Thanks!!

I think Florida, Texas, and California have the top three largest coin collecting communities. Southern California especially should have plenty of stuff for you. There is the Long Beach show, which is 3 times a year I think - that alone would be enough for me.

I don't think I would base a large life decision like this on whether your new city will have a hobby presence. There are airplanes that can get you from Irvine to Orlando quite comfortably.

I agree entirely. I think the move makes sense for us. She knows it does too, however she is nervous and grasping at any possible objections, my hobby being one of them apparently.

Women logic...I dunno...I just nod and smile :)

Your wife sounds very considerate. And smart, as she doesn't want you to drive her crazy if you don't have enough of a coin fix in CA. ;)

There are three Long Beach shows each year, each of which is accompanied by a Heritage auction.

There are also smaller shows - Anaheim, (a new/different) Santa Clara and others.

Also, Spectrum is in Irvine, which means you will be able to go to their office and view a number of Stack's-Bowers auctions each year.

Bingo!

I live, what, 8 miles from Spectrum. A HUGE advantage.

At one point Heritage was showing coins in their LA office but I don't know if they do that anymore.

When you get into town let's meet up! Maybe at a show.

For now, at least, Heritage is no longer showing lots in their Beverly Hills office.

Is there a planned community for coin collectors in CA? Kind of like those "fly-in" communites for pilots, and ones for old farts, and boating communities? "Leisure Coin World" ?

I kind of figured that would happen. Too much expense for them. Oh well...it was nice while it lasted.

I also should mention to Cumberdale that Great Collections is out here in Irvine as well. They don't have any kind of formal lot viewing but I have (occasionally) asked to see a coin there. Ian is nice about that...

Thanks everyone for your insights. They are much appreciated :) I've shared them with my wife and she feels reassured that I won't "die of coin starvation" (her words) in Irvine. Now to all the other objections...

If we do make the move I do hope to connect with those of you who are local!
