Interested in Crusader coins. Can someone recommend reference material/dealers?

19 posts in this topic

I've always been interested in Crusader coins, mainly from the historical point of view, but I don't know SQUAT about them. Can someone recommend some reference material and dealers? I would like to deal with some reputable dealers and see their inventory before buying off of ebay. Also, does NGC slab ancient coins? thanks...

Also, does NGC slab ancient coins?

No.

NGC might have set guidelines as to what date they will slab, but I've never found it. In fact, the only reference on their web site about it is completely wrong. It doesn't list many countries and the dates listed are wrong for those listed. I've submitted coins from countries not listed and from earlier dates than listed and they slabbed them.

The late 1400's is a safe bet as to where NGC will start slabbing coins. I have had coins from the early 1500's slabbed, but from the 1200's returned as non-eligible type.

Wow, I didn't even look at the poster before responding. Nice to see The Thing back here. thumbsup2.gif

I'm sure when JamminJ wonders by or if TruthTeller sees this, they'll have some book title for you.

Yep, i'm on a crusade for info about Crusader coins. Very little to be found on the subject. I was hoping TruthTeller might be dead by now or something. Oh well. Supposin' I do get some nice coins, if NGC won't slab them, who is the next best?

I have seen some ancients graded by ANACS, but I don't know if that is new or what. They don't list ancients on their web site. ICG will grade them, but it's ICG. Most collectors seem to prefer them raw.

At a local shop there have been several recently. They look awesome. So much so that I purchased a book on them to try and gain a little info on their history.

You've chosen a tough topic in Crusader coins. If I was thinking of collecting these coins I'd start with a book or two, perhaps Coins of the Crusader States or Price Guide to Coins of the Crusader States .

Next, I'd start browsing online dealers to get a feel for what's out there and some prices. Here's four that are on my favorites list which had at elast one Crusader coin:

Virtual Coin Shop

The freakish Allan Berman

Light on inventory right now, but maybe for future reference Classical Numismatic Group

Civitas Galleries

Enjoy the hunt, how did you become interested in Crusader coins?

Thanks for the info JamminJ. I've had always heard of them, knew a little about the history of them, and knew it wasn't an area that too many collectors specialized in. I have a large collection of Byzantine coins, so I figured I could start something new.

I always wondered why Texans want people dead? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif Then I remembered it some type of inferiority complex. Explains LBJ, GWB I, GWB II and The Thing. makepoint.gif
