Coin Cleaning

5 posts in this topic

Hi everybody, just joined tonight. We have been selling coins on eBay for over a year. I was told from the time I started collecting when I was 5 that coins should never be cleaned no matter what. I have had people tell me that using warm water and dish soap is not considered cleaning. I feel that cleaning is cleaning and don't want to take a chance on lowering the value of a coin. What is the general feeling about non-chemical cleaning just to remove dirt and residue? Any input would be welcome.

Not cleaning a coin yourself is really the best route. Too often at NCS we have situations where a novice collector has cleaned their coin and done so improperly. The result is a coin with a value far diminished from what would have been if the coin had been properly conserved or even left as is.

While I am not able to find the product you mention, any product with "polish" in the name sounds like a quick way to devalue your coins. Again, I would not recommend using such products.

Best I can tell, Porter's Friend Metal Polish is made by North American Polish Corporation in Ferndale, MI.

I have no experience with this product, but expect it would completely ruin a coin if used on it.
