PR Jeff w/less then FS

I was rummaging around a box of raw PR Jeffs from the days I was buying/looking for cams/dcams, and decided to put them in my 3-ring binder with pages of their own. As I was perusing them with a 10X loupe to find the best of each date, I came across this 1960 with less then FS! I was always under the impression all proofs had FS (all my other raw 1960s have 6). Obviously, I was wrong but news to me!

Not uncommon with poorly strucked proofs in the 1960's especially the prooflike looking SMS coins but there is a tough post 1970 proof that is not an easy find in full steps. I won't say what it is (not that some of you already know) as I'm still searching for this coin myself! gossip.gif

Close, but no cigar! 27_laughing.gif I was thinking of another date! Yes, the 81-S can be a challenge if you want 5 clear steps! The 1980-S is tough in 6!

But there's another one! grin.gifinsane.gif

It figures. That is one date I don't have any more of!

Carl

Do you have any other proofs from the 1980's?

Oops, I almost gave the answer away! blush.gif

Yes I do have multiples of every other date from the '80s. Let me look at them... Hmmm a few of the '81 T1s look weak, but the other 20 have 6 full steps, is that the date?

smile.gif Just kidding. I checked my 2 1981 Type 1s and they had very poor steps. The '80 has 5 steps. The '81s do have excellent frost though. If you are looking for a 1980s date other than '80 or '81 then I have an excellent full 6 step proof for you...

Carl

Can you keep a secret? I don't want anyone else to know what that mystery coin is. gossip.gif

If by chance you have one, I have $30 to buy!

The only other issue, post-1980, that I've ever seen with weak steps is the 1991-S. It can be tagged from 5-6 below pillar 2. Like you said, the 81-S T1 and 80-S are weak, but finding a 6 step 81-S T2 is the biggest challenge. All the rest have been fairly easy to find with 6 full steps.

Well golly gee, I thought someone besides Carl would be nagging at me to reveal the date of the coin! I don't believe it's a rarity (yawn) but it may not be that easy of a find. It's getting late and I can hardly keep my eyes open........(yawn)........

ok, here's the date.......it's a 198..........

OKThis thread is back by popular demand from all those PMs I've been receiving over the last few weeks! Thank you Carl!!! 27_laughing.gifSeriously, I have located a 6 step in this so-called mystery coin! The first coin has the 6 steps. It can barely be seen but it's there! 893applaud-thumb.gifThe second pic is also a type one, same as the first pictured proof but with the more common 5 steps! And the third picture is the type two proof with the 6 sharp steps! There are other differences between the two varieties! Hopefully the pictures are large enough but can you see the differences? And all three coins have the same date!
