minimum grade submission for weakly struck 1921-D walkers?

3 posts in this topic

i have two toned 1921-D walkers that "appear" to be about VF. this date is well known to be weakly struck and i believe my coins may be uncirculated or AU due to the luster across the devices and their lack of nicks and scratches. i plan on submitting these coins for grading. my question is does it help to submit with a minimum grade (AU or MS60) or not? my concern is that graders may be reluctant to give a grade this high due to pressure they may feel from potential complaints from buyers. does stressing my opinion of a high grade help or not? any opinions?

The graders will never see your minimum grade. They will only see the coins and grade them as such. If the coin meets your minimum grade only then is it put in a slab. If it doesn't, then it gets returned to you raw. The graders don't have a clue about your minimum grade request nor would they care.

I think it is best to not have a minimum grade. That way you will know what NGC truly feels the coin will grade. If you do put a minimum grade and they return it unslabbed how will you know their opinion? It could have been a just missed the AU grade EF45 or it could have been a no way in hell F15. You'll never know.

And you can crack the coin out with ease if you don't like the grade.

I think also that the graders are very familiar with issues that are weakly struck. They will be quite adept at grading the pieces.
