Don't know who or how many would be interested in this, but I for one will definitely be taking notes on prices realized after it closes.

I want to let everyone know that my Jefferson Nickel registry set (which is ranked #4 all-time) will be auctioned by Bowers and Merena on Saturday, August 14th in Pittsburgh, a few days before the ANA show. I guarantee that there are several once-in-a-lifetime coins available here! The monsters include the UNIQUE 1960-D in FS and the finest known 1961-D (PCGS 65FS). The 60-D is the only one I have ever seen that has no weakness under the 3rd pillar and the 61-D is just flat-out awesome. This coin caused me to pay several times more than any Jefferson nickel set had ever sold for when I bought the personal collection of Jefferson Nickel Analyst author Bernard Nagengast many years ago. The 1963-D is 65 FS and a pop 2. The 1953-P (65 FS) is easily the finest known with nice toning and sharp steps. I could mention others, but you get the point!

The majority of coins in this set came from the original Nagengast collection. Back in the 1970's when original rolls were more available, he searched about 300,000 uncirculated coins to build his collection! Since that time, I have upgraded through my own decades long search at coin shows and auctions. I strongly encourage you to check out this auction as most of these coins are rarely available. I understand there will be internet bidding to go along with the live auction. Check out the bowersandmerena.com website for more details. Incidentally, the 38-P 67FS, 38-S 65FS, and 55-D 65FS are not available and will be replaced with other coins. However, I am adding a beautiful high-end 1943/2 PCGS 66FS (5 3/4 sharp steps) to compliment the rest of the collection! I hope you find something special to enhance your collection. Good Luck!

Steve Wells (Nevadaman Collection)

Sounds like a great set.

Too bad they are in the wrong slab. I get so depressed when I see great coins in the wrong slab.

How about Not-so-great coins in the 'wrong' slab?! acclaim.gif

Steve Wells is a classic act all by himself! One of the greatest uncompromising FS Jefferson collectors of all time! A true FS Jefferson nickel collector in it's own right! He doesn't shy away with the facts about his collection! He gives credit where it's due! Steve Wells rates right up there with Nagengast, Fivas, Ragsdale and a few others I'd like to mention. This collection has over 35 years of work into it! It doesn't get anymore exciting then this! For most of us, we've never seen a

1961-D in full steps let alone a 1960-D! I sure hope Bowers and Merena provide great photos of these coins! I'm certain will see many EDS coins from this great collection! Here's a story I'd like to share because I've had Steve on the phone a couple of times and he kept telling me that he was going to come see me but that hasn't happen yet but for some reason or another I keep thinking this guy is going to show up on my steps. 27_laughing.gif But for now, I don't know because he's selling his collection!

Hopefully, someday will meet. Congrats to Steve Wells!

Leo

Thank you David!

How can the mintage be "unknown"?

Because no one can tell how many were shrunk once they left the mint? confused-smiley-013.gif

For those interested in seeing steps to my 1960-D, this is the best I've been able to locate in 14+ years as a FS collector! See Attachment!

I'll post the rest of the coin tomorrow. 27_laughing.gif

Leo, those are pretty nice steps for a 60-D! Mine doesn't come close.

I called Steve yesterday and we talked Jeffs. Found out he lives about 5 miles from me. Going to get together for some food and show and tell Jeffs some day soon. He's selling the collection for a couple of reasons, but the main one is simply too hard and/or expensive to upgrade now. Stays away from post-1964 Jeffs. He actually bought two sets from BN and amalgamated them into one, then proceeded to upgrade over time. Most of BNs original coins are gone---too bad as I suggested a BN pedigree (even for the coins not of reg value) would have been important to the hobby. He expects to realize a 6 figure amount from the coins!

I'll tell him to give you a call about a visit Leo! Why don't you make a trek to Vegas and meet up with the two of us? Mark, John, Jason, solid, and any other FS Jeff people out there, "COME ON DOWN"! Bring your Jeffs and be prepared to eat/drink/live FSers for a few hours!

What ya think guys?? wink.gif

It would be a real pleasure to do what you are talking about, David. I doubt it will happen for me, but let me know when you make the arrangements to see Steve. You never know, less likely things have happened!

Hoot, I'm probably going to meet up with him in a couple of weeks. We both have certain days/times when available to get together so some future Wednesday inside of 2 months is the plan.

I know it would be next to impossible to get all interested here so soon but I really would like to plan for something like I mentioned maybe sometime next spring or early summer---enough time for the dates and arrangements per each persons availability. It could even be extended out to Sept or Oct of '05! Wouldn't want to submit any of you to our normal summer heat! Just so as many of us as possible can get here.

As far as I know, Steve and I aren't going anywhere so keep it in mind!

Sure thing David,

On your way over, just swing by and pick us up! It would be know trouble at all! 27_laughing.gif

Here's a pic of the 60-D. See attachment! ANACS graded it a MS64 and it came from the Bob Jerich Collection way back in the mid 1990's. That guy had a great collection with many EDS, high grade and 6 step coins.

To my recollection, as told to me by Jim Ragsdale, the last great roundup of FS collectors was held in Chicago in the early 1990's. 5 of the best collections of that time were there. I'd like to be at the next one but would probably end up getting mugged in the process! 27_laughing.gif

Thanks David! (Oops, thought Hoot said it!) 27_laughing.gif

David,

Invite Steve to the boards, I'd like to chew his butt out! 27_laughing.gif

Sounds like a great idea David. I'm all for getting together with a couple of great collectors as yourself and the others you mentioned. A regular step-fest!

Mark, shirley you jest!!! My money would be on everybody but me!!! But on the serious side, I'd like to see Steve, Ray Overby, Corso, justhavingfun owner, a bunch of us wanna-bes from the forums and a friend of mine from Chicago, who, if he brought out his raw set, would blow everyones mind, come to Vegas for (and I like the name) "Step-Fest"!!!

In fact, I think that were we to expand it to include several dealers, we could hold an annual BST Show & Tell for FS Jeffs. Get to see some of the best in the world, talk to the best in the biz, and have a lot of fun in between! And plenty of bibs for everyone! wink.gif

Just an idea, but its growing on me! Time to start contacting people---find out their interest in and availability for this, and go from there.

Suggestions on appropriate dates for those from the forums interested are needed too, so lets have 'em!

David
