Stolen 1919-S SLQ recovered by NGC

25 posts in this topic

I want to express my deepest gratitude to the staff at NGC and in particular to Mark Salzberg for the recovery of this coin that was stolen from me in the Superior Auction lot pickup area at the FUN show in January of this year. Mark's incredible memory of a picture on a flyer of the coin I showed him in March led him to recognize the coin when it was sent in for show grading at the recent Baltimore coin show. The staff at NGC then went to work verifying it was indeed the same coin. I expected this would take at least a few weeks but would have understood a month or more. Incredibly though, I have the coin sitting in front of me now as I write this. I have been in contact with the submitter of the coin trying to track down the perpetrator of the theft. Remarkably, the coin is still in the pristine state it was in when I purchased it.

Now all we have to do is get a mob together and chase down the clown who stole it.

Anybody interested in how something like this could happen? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif Usually if you're a bidder, you need to register to get a number card to bid. And simularally you need that number card to pick up your winning items. Did you set the item down for a second to do something else? 893naughty-thumb.gif

David,

I’m glad to hear that you were able to get your coin back, and in the same condition, man you’re lucky! That sure is a beautiful coin. It would have been a shame to have lost it forever or worse yet, had it ruined by the thief who stole it.

Kudos to the crime stopper team at NGC. Job well done! Now let’s hope the person who stole it can be tracked down and caught. 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

As a fraud investigator, I would have to say that once you have this information, even a blind man could work backwords and find the perp. What is the problem? Is someone not going to know who sold them or consigned them a coin this valuable?
