Pcgs registry, pcgs FS nickels look dead!

7 posts in this topic

check out this Heritage auction!

There are over 15 pcgs FS nickels in that auction with many tough dates like the 70-S, 72, 76, 76-D, 77, 79 with very few bids or no bids at all! The same goes for a couple of H-grade non FS coins, nobody wants them!

This is great news for the vast majority of FS Jefferson nickel collectors! Heck, a few don't even look like they have full steps! Simular findings can be seen throughout Ebay! If it's not a low pop 1 coin than nobody wants them!

This really says alot about buying the coin and not the slab, most pcgs registrants ARE buying the slab and not the coin!!! 893naughty-thumb.gif The value of the undergrade coin is lost when the focus of the registry is to only buy the highest numbered slabs! What a shame to the hobby!

I think you're WAY too early to surmise that these coins are not going for big bucks (for Jeff nickels). There are 7 days left in the auction and the signature sale is not yet over. Also, if you look at the list of Jeffs in the auction, some have VERY healthy bids at this time.

I know that you don't like PCGS Leo, but not all coins in their holders are lousy. There are MANY good coins in their holders, graded correctly and correctly attributed! tongue.gif Insofar as well and poorly graded coins goes - and correctly attributed and misattributed coins as well - I've seen as many in ANACS holders as PCGS, and proportionately more overgraded ANACS coins.

I would not consider ANY of the grading services 100% in the matter of grading and attribution, but neither are you or I. (And I'm glad that I don't run a grading service.)

I've got to agree with Mark here, Leo. Heritage is like any other auction---the hot and heavy bidding will get down to the nitty-gritty in the final 24 hours. Not many FS Jeff collectors that want any/all of those listed will put in their highest bid til then, unless the present bid is already at or above their level of comfort in which case, they'll drop out. Same with eBay. Rarely will I place bids on newly listed coins I want. I'll put them in my Watch list and wait til the last 2-5 seconds to bid/snipe. Just doesn't make sense to do it any other way, unless you don't mind bidding against yourself and probably spending more for the coin.

I'll have a story in about a week that relates directly to this, and why any other way can hurt your pocket book!

Hey Hoot!

How well do you think pcgs did grading that 2000-D? With the big two hits on the lower jawline and in the hair, it's not a MS67 coin! MS65 tops! But yet the bids up to $400!

Do you really believe someone is buying the coin here? No way man! 27_laughing.gif

I believe that the coin is probably properly graded. I say that, knowing #1 that a scan of a 1991-present nickel will render a very bad image; the flat devices make all flaws look huge in images, where in person they are infinitesimal. #2, Heritage is known for their bad images. #3, any image that is placed on Heritage is enlarged and exaggerates the flaws of a coin. #4, The colors are totally off. #5, grading coins by such images is a mistake in-and-of itself.

I would not bid on that coin because I can't see it in person and I think it's over-valued, especially considering the series as a whole. I also think that chasing pop-top material in the J nickel series will lead to regret im many cases, the post-1990 nickels being one of the potentially riskier areas of the series.

Oh well, to each their own. confused-smiley-013.gif

Good point but what about the coins' value? How does a coin get it's value? How is this determined? Certainly, it takes all kinds but doesn't a knowledgable collector take into consideration the scarcity or rarity of a coin prior to bidding! There are several reasons used to determine the value of a coin.

A.) The first and foremost, would be the coins mintage! Of course, this is not always the case when hoards of a low mintage coins end up common is high grade.

B.) The second best reason would be the condition/grade of the coin!

C.) Toning would make another good candidate for determining a coins' value!

(And yes, there are probably more good reasons but this is the best I can do for now) laugh.gif

Can we think of any other reasons that determines a coins' worth?

Not really unless you want to include the false sense of values registry points give to coins! 27_laughing.gif

Whenever two or more knowledgeable collectors understand the merits of A, B and C and engage with each other for the owners' right to a coin through bidding in an auction, this course of action best fits (and it's the only way) to determine the true value of a coin! acclaim.gif

David, I also snipe for two reasons! One is to acquire the coin at a cheaper price! The other is, I'm a poor worthless sap who doesn't have the big bucks to throw out the window! 27_laughing.gif
