Machine doubling on proofs in a set - Common? Collectible?

12 posts in this topic

Modern proofs - after 1964 - are struck twice using a special press. One would reasonably expect to see some slightly doubled impressions.

The mere fact that it is a proof doesn't guarantee that there can't be flaws or errors overlooked by the Mint employees handling the coins. For all we know, someone may have had a bad hangover from the night before.

Is it more unusual to find machine doubling on coins in a proof set? I thought the mint took extra special steps to make sure proofs didn't have these types of errors..are they collectible in proof coins?

I know that many collectors prefer NOT to have machine doubling on their proofs, so my guess would be that coins showing this may need to be considered "discount" examples.
