Little Story of a 1965 Washington Quarter

14 posts in this topic

I recently picked up a First Day Cover/ First Day of Issue sealed 1965 clad Washington quarter. I think I paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $2. The coin and envelope charmed me and it wasn't until I got home I studied the coin itself. The more I looked at it the more I was amazed at its detail and lack of any marks. The stike and luster is full and the toning absolutely authentic and highly attractive.

Now, I wanted to preserve the history of this coin as finding these First Day covers is tough. I sent it to PCI with the following results. (For what it's worth: I honestly believe NGC would also 68 this one. The added bonus is outside of the SMS's, this is a difficult series to locate in MS68.)

Pat,

You say "First"---it says "Frist"! And not just once, but twice! Who's right? wink.gif Just wished to ask why PCI for the slab? VERY nice tone and detail on the 25c and would have thought NGC, PCGS, ANACS the choice for it!?!?

David,

It might well end up with NGC. I'm under the impression though, even if sent in the original packaging, NGC was not likely to attribute the coin on the insert.

It's funny, but as many times as I've looked at this one I never noticed the lame spelling error on PCI's part! Good catch (I might sent it back for correction if I don't go the NGC route...).

Way cool!!! I was 28 days old when issued. I like the history, the coin and the designated holder. Thanks for sharing.

That's the ultra rare San Clemente postmark on the FDC. I think they sell for $1000 in mint condition. Oh well. blush.gifwink.gif

Thanks guys. I don't have a photo of the reverse. It is equal in appeal with just a touch more luster even.

Now, does anyone know if NGC, under special consideration, would holder another like this? I don't have another, but do have a Commemorative in a First Day Issue sealed envelope.

No way. That makes you about 4-5 days older than me, I think...

That's funny! 27_laughing.gif How would you know if they got the grade right when they mispelled the word "frist", twice? Oh, by the way, there seems to be a piece of lint of some sort up by Washington's eye, brush that off, will ya? grin.gif

Very nice coin too!

The coin looks nice and mark free. I can see about half a dozen small hits while would likely exclude it from the MS68 at a real grading service, but an MS67 should still bring you some money.

As for PCI. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif Pat 893naughty-thumb.gif

That's a fantastic looking coin, Pat. I have a similar Jefferson nickel (but in lousy condition, as it's corroded) in a souvenier envelope and with a Jefferson stamp from 1968. Tough to break up those packs, but I can see why you would have in the case of that quarter! thumbsup2.gif

I've got a question pending to "Ask NGC" regarding the holdering of these coins with the proper designation on the insert...
