Opinions on newps: Barber and Seated stuff for type set...

10 posts in this topic

I recently added the Seated Dime, No Stars Half Dime, and Barber Quarter pictured below to my circulated type set. I'd appreciate any thoughts on each or all three.

1876 Seated Dime: the scan represents the color fairly accurately, but the toning appears a little lighter and more iridescent in person, and the coin retains a fair amount of luster.

1837 No Stars Half Dime: a fair image that loses only a small amount of detail.

1915 Barber Quarter: the white areas on the obverse are reflections from the remaining luster, and appear a similar color to the surrounding area in person.

On a side note, both seated coins came from board member BigD5 (Darin) and were among the best long distance coin transactions I've had. From answering questions, to prices and shipping, everything was excellent. thumbsup2.gif

wow beryl

i like all the coins thumbsup2.gif

they all look original with honest wear and look hand picked too

true collector coins with really good eye appeal

looks like the 1876 dime was put away decades ago in an album by a collector

go out in the marketplace and try to find even a small quanitiy of such coins on a regular basis

you cant!

berylcoin - That dime is sweet and I also like the quarter a lot. The dime looks just like one I sold recently that had years of album toning. Nice luster, and a delicate patina make those pieces look great. The quarter simply looks like a very nicely preserved circulated piece with excellent detail. What I like best about the half dime is how clean the obverse fields are. It's also a sweet coin from a neat time period in terms of coinage technology and shifts in design. Some great history surrounding the Mint in that period.

I like the coins very much and have to agree with Michael that the dime was likely an album stored coin for many decades. Of these, I like the half-dime the best. This might have as much to do with the higher fidelity Gobrecht Liberty than with actual surface preservation, but the coin also looks problem-free with terrific grey patina. The no stars issues are definitely moose coins as far as eye appeal. thumbsup2.gif

I just spent the better part of an hour writing a longwinded post detailing my thoughts on these three coins--then accidentally deleted it. 893censored-thumb.gif Here is the Readers Digest version:

In person, the toning on the dime is lighter, "thinner", and quite pretty IMHO. Although the open areas of the fields have some abrasion and marks from circulation the coin remains relatively flashy. That luster, combined with a lack of visible (to me) hairlines indicates to me that any past cleaning was very light.

I like the overall look of the No Stars Half Dime well enough to purchase it despite it being graded much lower than the bulk of my set. The halo effect around the head and shoulders is a look I'm unfamiliar with, but the coin has smooth, even surfaces completely free from hairlines and unsightly nicks or scratches.

As for the Barber, despite having a good deal of crustiness and luster in the protected areas--probably a little more than I would expect on most choice XF coins--the details look only XF 40 to me. I assume it was weakly struck at the hair and wingtips, but I don't know the series that well. Fortunately, I can live with slightly weak detail on a coin with the apparently original surfaces and color of this quarter.

Overall, I'm quite happy with all three, and if I decide to upgrade the No Stars Half Dime my brother could use it in his lower grade typeset.

Thanks for the feedback.

Now I'm going to go beat myself to death with a keyboard.

I like your web site and checked out your type set, it is very attractive. The Trade dollar really looks cool. Are the coins kept in an album?

Are the coins kept in an album?

To answer your question Tom: sort of. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif I started the set using the Coin Edge album pages linked below, but became frustrated by their ill-fitting dime and odd denomination holders. I like the presentation and flexibility of the album, but the added hassel of the holders and the difficulty of vewing individual coins has soured me a bit. I found a source for Air-tite style foam rings to alleviate the fitting problems, though, and may give the album another try. It seems like every style of album has its own drawbacks. confused-smiley-013.gif

As for the website, I've really enjoyed it and recommend that anyone who suffers coin withdrawl get one of their own. grin.gif
