My first 2003 Coin of the Year!

7 posts in this topic

As tradition, that would be a 2003 ASE! I order a roll every year, and it's always fun to see the first dates coins of the new year, especially when they are big and silver! I am attaching a photo, but it's not the typical photo since I don't want you to guess the grade or look at the minute details, so experimenting with my photo skill, I came up with a slightly more artistic/asthetically pleasing photo:

Wow, a nice coin for a modern. tongue.gif I think the SAEs look nice. I have a few in my collection. I'll post a pic of my first coin of the new year. It's a 1941 beatiful rainbow rim toned Walking Liberty Half, PCGS MS64. It's absolutely beautiful. grin.gif

It's funny, I like the silver eagles, but not the gold ones, maybe because I collect Saints and can't stand what they did to the design, or maybe it's because the silver eagle is larger than the original design, but the gold eagles are all smaller than the original. All I know is that I like the silver and not the gold! And yes, it's pretty for a modern, one of the few I really collect in quantity, I put away a roll every year!

I also hate the design of the GAEs. It appears to me that the mint doesn't have any talented artists, because they had to use a classic design. Our coins severely lack creativity. It just seems to me that they should create new designs instead of stealing old designs. I realize that the SAEs have the design of the WLHs, but they actually improved the design, and it looks good on a large silver coin! grin.gif

Nice coin, unlike most modern stuff. You'd think the mint would take a hint and put more old designs on new comms like the Buffalos and SAE's or make new designs for circulating coinage like the state quarters. They're the only coins in demand.

Change? They don't need no stinkin' change.

That's a nice photo! The U.S. Mint has really made the quality of these Silver Eagles awesome. I appreciate that not everyone enjoys moderns or bullion coinage, but from a purely technical standpoint, the quality control and definition in the strike are magnificent.
