Question for Morgan collectors-----

4 posts in this topic

I was doing some surfing and came across something I'm hoping any of you Morgan collectors can enlighten me on, as I know less then nothing of this series.

The following pic shows a 1921 obverse, then three close-up partials of the MM area from Phil, SF, and Denver.

Not even needing to look closely at the Denver reverse, I see major differences in the wreath leaves, knot, berries and lettering size when compared to the other two. I'd like to know if in fact, the D Morgan is/was always like this or is this a pic of a variety? Is there a premium for it if variety? Is it just limited to 1921, or runs further back in the series?

Thanks ahead for any info!

The Denver mint coin just looks like a flat strike to me, which is not unusual for that coin at all. Most 1921 Morgnan dollars, but the D and S mints especially, are flat struck.

All of the 1921 Morgan dollars were struck from new hubs. They have numerous minor differences from the Morgan dollars that preceeded them.

BTW the "S" on the San Francisco mint coins looks large. Are you sure that is a 1921-S? The 1921-S had a tiny mint mark just like the Denver issue.

Bill is correct about the re-hubbing. There are a myriad of differences between the 1921 Morgan and its distant pre-1905 cousins.
