An Old Dirty Dollar For Your Viewing Pleasure

9 posts in this topic

Hi Folks, I haven't posted here in a while (no certain reason just haven't) and thought some of you all would appreciate this piece.

I've re-fined my collecting more toward the old classic Bust material for a while now. This is a 1795 Off-Center Small Eagle Draped Bust Dollar.

I believe it is attributed B-14 BB-51. Not sure if it's R-1 or R-2. No matter though. Actually the mintage for these was much less than the 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar.

This is what I would call a great example for "Stone originality, choice and problem free surfaces." The image I scanned. Please believe me when I say it looks exactly like the image in hand. I should know, I spent enough time trying to get it right. shocked.gif

Hope you enjoy, and any comments welcome, good or bad. smile.gif Feel free to post anything of the same (or different) that you would like to.

AHHHHHHH..... cloud9.gif My favorite obverse/reverse pairing on US coinage. grin.gif Here's mine, it's also an Off-Center variety and is graded PCGS EF40. The important thing about my coin, just as with yours, is the total originality to it. Like your piece, this is also scanned and looks essentially as it does in-hand. DaveG has seen this coin in person and he can attest to the veracity of these statements. 514280-J1795P40a.jpg

By the way, for those of you unfamiliar with the terminology of Off-Center, as used for this series, it simply means that the poition of Ms. Liberty on the obverse is more to the viewer's left (Off-Center) relative to the other varieties for the date. In other words, it's not an error.

Oh yes, stman, you should post here more often! smile.gif

Nice coins both! The BB-51 is generally regarded by the JRCS membership as an R.2, but as STMAN says... Who cares?

While considered "common" by the snobs who collect R.5+ die marriages (ahem, yours truly!), these coins with superb originality and eye appeal are very few and far between.

As for posting here or not, that's up to you. But, I've noticed that certain types of threads tend to fare better here than across the street due to the differences in tenor between the two places. If I felt a thread was worthwhile, I'll initiate it in both places.

PS While I'm typing this in, I can hear in the background the crowd at Shea roaring in joy. I'm missing one of the rare happy moments this season as a Mets fan. frown.gif

Here is the 1795 Flowing Hair counterpart to our Draped Bust coins. This is in an NGC VF20 holder and is also completely original. cloud9.gif514279-I179520a.jpg

Tom, thanks for posting those. Your off center dollar was pulled off the street a bit earlier than mine. My off center piece is in a PCGS VF20 holder. Here is my Flowing hair counter-part as well. It's totally original as well in a old rattle-holder PCGS VG10. Has some obvious circulation marks that don't bother me a bit.

That's a wonderful, original coin! smile.gif Anyway, who cares about a few, trivial circulation marks on a piece of this age and scarcity? I mean, unlike today's coinage dollars, these pieces circulated! Your coins have a terrific look for their grades and would be a welcome addition to most any collection.

Thanks Tom, if I didn't say so I love the "Look" of your's as well. I agree about the circulation marks on my Flowing Hair Dollar. I picked it up at the Santa Clara show and it was exactly what I was looking for. Needless to say when you're looking for total originality and find one.... you need to move quick as they don't stay for sale very long whatsoever.

And thanks to EVP as well for the kind words and information.

"Stone originality, choice and problem free surfaces."

That about says it all - for all of them! Those are genuinely incredible pieces! Thanks for posting! Now send it to me so that I can get my type collection off to a good start. grin.gif
