I have a local coin shop that sells silver washingtons for $1 each and silver jefferson nickels for 20 cents each. That is basically the price of silver. Think I should buy some?

i would myself not buy too many circ common generic common coins i would start to collect something that catches your eye that is more scarce

Exactly! I agree with Michael. Junk today will most likely still be junk tomorrow. I wish that when I was a kid in the '70's that I would have bought some high grade types. Proof Indian head cents and three cent nickles were way cheap. They would have made a far better investment that junk silver coins.

If you are looking for just silver, I'd suggest buying a "pool" from a bullion dealer. They also have pools for gold.

20c each seems rather cheap for silver nickels. The silver nickels are 5g and 35% silver = 1.75g of silver. At 31.1035g per troy oz, that's 17.77 nickels make up an oz of silver. At 20c each that's $3.55 per oz of pure silver. Even given wear, that seems like a good deal.

 

The quarters are 6.3g and 90% silver for 5.67g of pure silver. That's 5.49 per oz or $5.49 per oz of pure silver.

 

Silver is currently $5.67/oz.

 

Personally, I'd only buy them if you were looking for a cheap way of owning silver or you liked them. Silver isn't going to make you rich and these are very common coins.
