How do they know it's a civil war dollar? It could be any date from 1856 to 1889.

 

It looks cool but it still hurts to see a half dollar tortured like that.

in order to apply enough pressure to push something into one side, all of the details of both sides would affected and smushed.

 

possibly a hole was drilled that the dollar coin was slid into, or the gold dollar has been shaved off very thin.

yep seems a strange combination but would be interesting on a lady collector at a show

A depression was probably cut into the half using a lathe and then the gold dollar was laid in. If the hole was VERY slightly smaller than the diameter of the dollar, the coin could be heated making it expand slightly and the gold dollar then placed in the depression. When the coin cooled and shrank it would hold the gold dollar tightly in place.
