Would this even qualify as 5 full steps?

5-5-4-5 Steps 4 and 5 are tagged under pillar 3. There's also a major hit that bridges steps 3 and 4 under pillar 3.

Hope that helps. Hoot

Hi Bruce - the first coin simply would not go 5 steps. The second might, but from such an enlargement, there's too much detail and not enough perspective to tell. Looks like it stands a chance. Mark.

Bruce, I have to agree with hoot. The second MAY have a chance---would depend on the grader and the alignment of the planets at the hour said grader loupes the coin! 893whatthe.gif

1971 and 1972 ....

My guess is, the first pic is of the 1972 and the second is of the 1971. The former are tough to locate in five while the 71 can be located with 6 steps! A true five or 6 step coin must have steps that look strong and uniform in quality! This can't be said for dates such as the 60-D, 61-D on so on! If an area of the step is weak and this normally occurs under the 2nd and third pillars, it depends on what date is in question. And if that is the best we can do so far as we continue to search and improve our collections then we keep that coin until a better one comes along.

And that may take years for some dates!

Or does the hit take that out of the question???

Hits, nicks abrasions, scuffs, you name it, can appear anywhere on a coin. The locations of these marks and if the scarcity of the coin plays a role, may determine just how picky you can be with each date.
