i am trying to see if this coin has a chance for a 65?

the fields are really clean and i think it may have a chance when compared to all the other certified 65's i own.....

it would definetly clear 64....64+?

what do you guys think

I agree about the weak strike on the hair but the reverse is well struck. There are a few areas of minor scratches on the reverse but this coin should get a 65 based upon what I see.

1888 P is known for an average strike. This coin has an average strike. Obverse and Reverse Fields are fairly clear and I only see minor obverse device hits.

Nice coin. If the luster is present then this is a very solid MS65.

Couple of observations on this coin

I have seen very few with a die crack at the top of the hairline going through the "L" in liberty and out the other side at the "B" & "U" - kind of cool.

Usually 65's for a Philly mint are hammered - this one not so much but could be a later die state - fields look nice.

There appears to be some contamination on the coin on the reverse next to the left side star which a little acetone bath may help.

I am in the 64 mindset mostly because of the markings on the reverse between america and the leaves and above mentioned issues. (E)

All and all a nice coin - thanks for sharing

Don't you think that is a bit rough on this coin? I mean sure those marks are there, but surely still has enough going for it to make 65 going on those images.

I do not think so. I rendered my opinion using my (20) MS65 morgans as a reference. If are you are disagreeing with my opinion of the grade, which of my observations do think is incorrect.. My determination was with all points considered, not just the marks.

I actually like the coin

I await your response

I am gonna say this one makes it into MS 65. We may not agree here but that is what I think.

But I'm betting that you cherry picked your MS65 Morgan Dollars, and most are probably high end for the grade. This coin may not be a +, but it is a solid 65 (unless I am missing something or the photos are omitting pertinent details).

Well I needed to take new pictures of my 88 anyway.

Brush marks on the obverse are on the coin

Mark below the left wing is on the coin - the rest

is holder scratches or reflection off those scratches

I do not remember cherry picking this one but it is hammered as you can

see. MS65

I hope this helps the OP on if his will make a 65 or not ...

I still like those Die Cracks :o) on the OP's

Based on your image, I would still say 65. I have seen dozens of coins in both NGC and PCGS holders at shows in 65 holders that favor the coin in the original post.

I quite honestly don't care about the judgement of any TPG, I trust my own judgement. (Mini rant) If you are offering your photos of a TPG graded MS65 1888 P as a comparison. I would prefer to own the OP's coin.

My judgement is based solely on the photos. If I use your photos as a standard, then the OP's coin is most definitely a MS65.
