When I initially saw this coin I thought of TomB. I picked it up possibly for my dad (his birth year) as a gift. what date is considered the "key" to this series? I was thinking 49s.

Nice looking coin Goose! Depends on how you're looking at the series. If you're collecting without regard to Full Torch/Full Bands, then the 49S is the key. However if you are collecting with Full Torch in mind, it appears that there are some dates in the 50's which are tougher to get a hold of. Still - very nice coin! smile.gif

Nice looking coin, goose. I certainly hope that I don't remind you of the year 1949! shocked.gif

OOPS!

the color reminded me of something you'd like.

It's not usually thought of as the key to the series and some consider it a separate series, but the '82-P is less common than the '49-S in unc. If you really want a tough unc than you have to look at the '82-NMM and for a rare dime there is the '75 No- S.

The '83-P and '82-D are probably tougher in unc than the '49-S also. While there are lots of '75-P's around, in a decent attractive grade being worthy of being called MS-60 these are probably tougher than the '49-S also. In gem grades most of the toughest coins are the clad issues.

Far more clad gems were made than the older gems but a very tiny percentage have survived.

That's a great looking Roosie Goose - it'll be a good companion to the '49 nickel I (oops! PCGS) have for you! smile.gif

Cladking,

Great feedback!!! 893applaud-thumb.gif

I really do enjoy reading about your insights into clad coinage. It's refreshing to find a different emphasis than what one is accustomed.

Attached is another '49-S Roosie that I bought 12-13 years ago. The toning appears to be similar to yours. Before the FT became the standard, the '49-P and '49-S were the top priced Roosies.
