Mislabeled date on insert, but there's more to it...Put your thinking cap on!!

21 posts in this topic

Ok, here is my dilemma, see if you can follow grin.gif:

It seems as the person who originally sent these in for grading sent them all in together. I bought 2 1961 PF64 coins from the same person at the GSNA Show with the following serial #'s: 1709952-006 & 1709952-004. The -006 is the mislabled one with the insert saying 1960.

Now, what if coin 1709952-005 is actually the 1960 coin and the inserts were switched accidently by the grader or whomever slabs them, assuming that they were labled at the same time, by one grader, and now is also holdered incorrectly as a 1961 while it should be holdered as a 1960.

My concern is 2 fold, first is to obviously get it reholdered with the correct date on the insert and second, if the labels were switched accidently as mentioned above, I would want the coin regraded as who knows, maybe my mislabeled coin is really graded at a much higher grade but the actual insert is in another coin slab. So, you guys understand what I mean?? confused.gif

I hear that this issue (mislabled insert) is usually handled by NGC for free but I also want to tell them that I want it regraded, for the reasons I have mentioned above. So, any tips or an email address to someone at NGC where I can forward this thread link to? I know I could call them but I am better at writing it then trying to explain the situation over the phone. They may think I had too much to drink or something.. laugh.gif

Thanks,

Chris (AKA - Noob)

I'm not positive, but I'm guessing they will tell you that the coin grades are verified after being slabbed, but before being shipped, by a verifier. Therefore, while they missed the incorrect date, they did check the grade.

If you want to know if the coin is a higher grade (the -005 is a PF66) then you'll need to resubmit it under the regrade service.

I hope these are wildly toned coins, since they are very inexpensive coins at these grades and not worth resubmitting.

Thanks for the quick reply and thanks for posting a little about the grading process. I guess the regrading submission will take care of both my issues and as for the toning, it is yummy, a lot better then the pic could capture.

Hey noob, I looked up the NGC certification number for you on the web site. The number you think the coin might be, 1709952-005, is listed as a 1961 PF66 Jefferson. Your theory might hold up. Of course, keep in mind that there is virtually no value difference between these two grades for this coin, the money involved is in the color.

Thanks for looking up the cert.#'s gmarguli and Tom. I might give them a call and try to explain the same thing to them. The money factor is no big deal but would really like to have it labeled correctly and add it to the NGC Registry Set. I probably will just send it in for regrade with a note of what I think happened for their knowledge.

Thanks again,

Chris

Chris,

No need to send this is in as a regrade. When you send it in, do not choose a grading service, just write "Mechanical Error" on your submission form and "Attn: Scott Heller". We will correct it at no charge.

Please also indicate on the form that it looks as though the tag may have been switched with another coin so the grade should be reviewed as well.

Let me know when you have mailed it out and I will let Scott know it is on the way and I will give him the background on the situation.

This is good information... I've got a 1972-D MS67 Kennedy that I can't add to my set because the insert states it is a .25c instead of .50c. I assume the seriel number (110891-053) is also reflecting it's a quarter and not a half too.

I'll sent it in today...

Braddick,

Your half is indeed entered as a quarter. foreheadslap.gif See Dena's and Andy's posts for how to handle this.

Pat,

With LB coming up, would it be easier for you to bring it to the NGC folks when you drive up?

I thought of that, but it's one more coin to keep an eye on at Long Beach. Couple that with the hassle of getting the coin back if NGC is unable to perform a change of insert on one day as I can only make it on Thursday.

But, it's a valid idea as when I went to the Post Office earlier today and took the coin along with a quick letter with me I had not taken NGC's address, so it'll have to go out on Saturday unless I follow your wise suggestion.

Thank you Mr. Lange. Do you suspect it would be possible, if dropped of first thing Thursday morning at Long Beach, I'd be able to pick it up at 4:00 PM or so that same day?

If not, I'll mail it out Saturday from Encinitas.

If you get it to us Thursday a.m. that should be time enough to get it fixed. It may not be ready until the next day, so you should do it only if you're going to be there on Friday, too.

Pat,

Drop it off at the show to avoid one-way postage/hassle. If they can't do it by 4PM same day, then just have them send it back and you pay for one-way postage. Either way, you save on the hassle of going to the PO once again.

Get to the NGC booth very early. Make sure that you bring Sarah or whomever a fresh cup o' coffee and maybe you can up the chances of the coin being done same day. Even if not, a cup 'o coffee would be a nice gesture to someone and would be kindly received.

BTW, I drink tea. Chinese style... Hint, hint!

The cool deal with this Kennedy is it offers a very strong, highly visible to the naked eye, clashed dies.

Maybe I'll just submit for designation review while I'm at it?

Either way EVP, I'm taking your advise and not messing with sending it via the Post Office.
