Toned Coins: Opinion needed

8 posts in this topic

I have a 1999 proof set and both the quarters and the "regular" coins have either tarnished or toned perfectly around the outside of each of the coins, giving the front of the coins a golden look. I think they're pretty, but I am considering which of my 1999 sets to break open and send in for grading (I want to have all the quarters and will send the regular coins to have as well). As far as I can tell, my "toned" set is of equal, if not better quality than the others. I'm wondering if the coloring will detract from the grade or increase it...and if anyone would send that set in for grading.

Thanks!

I tried to take pictures but the coloring didnt come out with the flash

Wow, not even close. My toning is more like the last one, just slight. If I let them sit for a bit, maybe out of the case, will they turn like that!?!?

Hard to tell about toning. It is actually the metal corroding that causes the toning. Some elements in the air may react to accelerate the process but it could take days, months or years to occur. If you find a set that is already toning so soon it is a good bet it won't take so long to tone fully.

Hi Jill - Like errorist said, it's hard to tell what to expect from toning. If you are storing your coins under conditions where they are currently toning, you should check to make sure that you are protecting your coins properly. This is not to say that you are doing something wrong, but coins will tone more rapidly when exposed to the atmosphere, to various chemicals from paper, wood, or plastic, to humidity, heat or sunlight.

As for your toned pieces, if you like them best of the coins you are considering submitting, then by all means, you should submit those. If they are pleasantly toned (as errorist said), then this may benefit them slightly in terms of grade. Hopefully, they are not having PVC deposited on their surfaces, in which case, they won't receive a grade.

Best, Hoot

I would hope that theres no PVC... they are still in the original mint box. Is there a PVC problem with the mint sets?
