EZ_E

Has asked me to post his response.

Sorry but I can't post on the boards because of the firewalls on my work computer. Anyway:

I believe that the 1909 S VDB is authentic because the seraphs on the "S" are vertical (straight up and down).

I believe that the 1916 D Merc is authentic but I forget the exact pointers to say exactly.

The '37 D Buffalo looks like an obvious fake to me as well as the '22 Lincoln since the reverse is so weak.

Great post!! I really like it a'lot.

p.s. Please post on your thread for me. Thanks.

Here is my opinion....

1916 D - Fake Not 100% positive... Could be real.. Would need to see in person...

Note: Note the location and shape of the mint mark. This looks to be an added mint mark which is thiner than the regular and the shape is a tad off.

469189-1916Dadded.jpg

1941/42 - Real

Note: Note the 4 is notched, the 1 is clearly struck, and the left side of the 2 is also struck well

469207-194121.jpg

1937 D - Real

Note: Note the moth eaten appearance of the back leg and neck

Note: Note the raised die marks extending down from the bisons belly through the field between the legs.

Note: Note the miss legs hoof is still present.

469200-1937D3legged.jpg

1909 S VDB - Real

Note: Note the small square, boxy mint mark with a notch in the upper serif and a die chip in the loser serif.

469198-1909Svdbfake.jpg

1922 No D - Real

Note: Note how the last 2 is stronger than the first 3 digits.

Note: Note that trust is stronger than the other 3 words in the strong reverse varity

469203-1922nod.jpg

Hope that helps some.

Hope that helps ... that 1916 D is starting to look more like the real deal... It is hard to tell from the photos... so if it is real... then all of them seem to be real ....

Thanks Bruce

Great work on presenting the pictures! A small part of me wanted to skip church and ushering to see what lots 148 to 177 were all about. Even if they were all gem BU, they couldn't had fetched much. It was odd that each was listed as a lot, but what do I know.

I had saved a Coin World article on the diagnostics of the '16 D and the '09 S VDB. I wish that I knew where they were.

Can any one recommend a book that covers the diagnostics on such key dates?

I know this is the NGC forum... But PCGS has a book out that covers the key date coins along with some grading tips... Has many good photos on what to key in on etc....

I know this is the NGC forum... But PCGS

But, primarily, it is the collector's forum. Am I right? confused.gif

Thanks for the info! What is the name of the book?

Before you go out and buy this book, here are a few interesting reviews! 27_laughing.gif

Leo

I found it diverting that two of the reviews found the 336 page book of little use for grading MS64 to MS67 coins;

From the reviews,

"Not all of the photographic plates are in color which is a shame because the black and whites are of absolutely no use when used to demonstrate the difference between an MS-67, and MS-66 and an MS-65: the photos are just not intense enough for one to really be able to see the flaws the editors are attempting to point out."

And;

"although the average collector like myself should understand that you probably won't be able to sit down after reading this book and tell the difference between an MS-64 and an MS-65 if you couldn't before."

crazy.gif I really thought it was funny! 27_laughing.gif Oh well! smirk.gif
