1999 P UNCIRCULATED SBA GOLD PLATED COINS?

11 posts in this topic

Buy gold plated coins if it's your thing, but be advised that advanced collectors think they are junk. The coins themselves are damaged and will always be downgraded from the plating if its still there or has been removed. The plating process damages the surfaces.

I would never buy that gold plated junk. The process of putting on and taking off of the gold plating damages the coin forever, in my opinion. I'm not sure about the copper core question, though. It seems like you would be able to see it on the sides no matter what. PCGS would never grade it, because of its previous state. ANACS would grade it. They're really good with errors and damage. So I think they would be your best bet if you want to get them certified and/or graded.

I used silicon carbide, extremely fine, the kind of stuff they used to polish the Hubbel Telescope mirror with. A thousand times more fine than baby powder.

It seems highly unlikely it can be silver since no silver planchets were prerared for the dollar coins. If it were struck on a quarter planchet the seller would have noticed the coin was light. I would start by weighing the coin and go from there. You seem to be finding some pretty good coins recently!

Go to the market place you can see the coin there it is at the top. Also, the coin weighs 8.1 grams according to my jewlers scale.

Hate to bust your bubble but 8.1 grams is the proper weight for a cu/ni SBA dollar and the original surface characteristics are impossible to determine after mechanically removing the gold plating. Otherwise it's an interesting error.
